Help! Strange noises coming from the engine!

Hi Guys,
I have a couple of strange sounds coming from my engine. Not knowing an awful lot about the inner workings of engines I am clueless as to what they are!

1) Under acceleration in 3rd-5th at relatively low revs (2 - 2500) there is quite a substantial blowing/rasping noise.

2) After releasing the accelerator there is a strange scraping/rubbing noise. If I rest my foot on the accelerator it seems to go. The sound does not seem to be affected by steering or braking. This only happens over 30mph and sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine. Thought it may have been the exhaust at first as it sounded as if it was blowing but it definately isn't!

The car is a '99 Bravo 1.6 hlx, 27000 miles, serviced sept '04.

Any suggestions?

Im no expert coz a> i have only had my Fiat 2 days and b> im not that mechanicaly minded. But have you concidered the gearbox? Ive had a couple of cars in the past with worn gearboxes and when you come of the accelerator thats when you start to hear a scraping/grinding noise. Not to bad when acclerating or when resting on the throttle, but when you come off of the power the noise is very apparent. Saying that though your car has low mileage, would be suprised if your gearbox was worn.

Cheers. I don't think it is the gearbox though. Like you say it shouldn't be going after 27000. The gear shifts are as smooth as and I'm not having any problems otherwise.
Cheers anyway

Your gearbox however is 6 years old and things do tend to go if they are not being used properly/regularly, not always are low mileage cars a good purchase. But hey i hope its not the gearbox but don't cancel it out just yet.

from my limited experience id be inclined to say gearbox aswell.

more presisely differential. ive had this 3 times now, and as soon as i start picking up on it i know instantly what it is.

hope it isnt in your case, but this is what ive had, with the same symptoms, drives perfecly, just knocking noise when off the throttle completley.

Cheers for that guys, I'll get the gearbox looked at with fingers crossed! After having nearly £700 of work done on that body and £130 to get the door to open the last thing I need is the gearbox to go!!

it'll cost you a fortune to have a gearbox 'looked' at. i **** you not, you'll be on the wrong side of £100 just to have it taken off and looked at. then you need it put back on!
if it goes off to s specialist then expect to shell out even more money

Check the heatshield first...

A guy on here last year hunted high and low and found it was the heatshield resonating at certain revs...hopefully its this which is a much cheaper option.

Any chance one of the brakes is stuck on? Unlikely since you had it serviced in Sept 04 but a possibility

I have to say that I thought at first it may be the brake stuck on as it sounds like that sort of a noise. The only thing that goes against this is that it isn't there when I accelerate.

Buzz - Cheers for the price warning. Do you know if there is any way of telling if it's the gearbox without removing it?

there is a way to get an idea, i took mine to the garage to have a look to see if it was the box again, he got it up in the air and twisted the drive shafts. there was a metalic grating noise coming from te box (passenger side drive shaft was being turned) and it confirmed my suspisions as he said straight away diff!

if youve got a good garage that you are loyal to get em to get it up in the air for a tenner and have a nose around once you told them the symptoms

Andy-
