Hi can anyone recommend a good Fiat garage in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire or a mechanic that repairs Fiats and knows his stuff.

Thanks

Hi, what is it that you need looked at?

Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben I have a Ducato 2.3 multijet motorhome on my drive and have a starting problem I used a local mobile mechanic he changed timing belt etc but I would like a diagnostic done on it as it will still not start he said he thinks I have knocked out some valves.

Or if you could recommend a good fiat mechanic/garage here in Aberdeen.

Thanks Keith

Hi Keith,

That's above my skill level mate I'm afraid! If you've had a belt change and it seems like you've "knocked out valves" you need to go back to the guy that did the belt change. The only way you'll knock out valves is if the belt was not done right. It's either not been tensioned properly and slipped or, he's not lined it up right. I'm presuming there would be some codes logged, but not totally certain. Where are you based? I'm in inverurie.

If you need a decent garage, try C&M McDonald at Kintore. They are a Suzuki dealer but have always done a decent job on my Punto, and they arebonly about £50 p/h labour. 01467 634890 ask for Iain Forbes.

Cheers

The Suzuki SX4 USES a Fiat jtd..so it will make some sense to them..

I would try a scan with MED just to see what codes are logged. A look at the fuel rail pressures would also be helpful..

did it start ok before the belt was done ?????

The motor ran well until the day it would not start freezing belt slip problem as the timinmg was out I was told, that's why the belt etc was changed but motor still did not start or fire, turns over very fast so the mobile mechanic mentioned the compression seems low as its turning over fast and he needs to do a valve check on the head as he thinks I have bent some valves.

it has bent valves has the timing is out
head off job new valves head back on poss new belt should be ok it will cost a bit

You can do a compression test with a dummy injector, someone is bound to have one in their kit.

possibly, there appeared to be some confusion when it 1st happened..,

as it now spins over freely ,
 I'd get ECU readings of rail pressures.etc to rule out the simple things that would stop ANY engine firing / running

then once they are ruled out,
get the belt timing checked properly, and do a compression test,

no point spending circa £200 on a head-off for the sake of it..,:)

IF it shows no compression - then check the valve clearances also,
any bent / damaged valvegear should show in bad clearance figures.., ;)

if its spinning over fast and the belt slipped the valves will be bent

Hi All just an update, MHome got taken into a garage, I asked them to check everything that had been done by the mechanic, they did and the timing was 1 tooth out, they could not do a compression test as the injectors were seized in along with glow plugs, so they removed the engine to work on it successfully they removed the injectors and then the head to find all exhaust rocker arms broken and marks ontop of the pistons but no piston damage, heads away getting worked on so I'm inspecting some valve replacement.

I cant get me head around how this damage could happen just trying to start the motor on the drive unless there is a under lying problem.

Anyway has any body, had or knows of any such problems like this as I would like to get to the root cause so it doe's not happen again.

Hi K F Dunn. Sorry to hear of your no doubt expensive experiences. Timing belts don't slip or jump teeth without a reason, such as a really worn out belt or something siezing. I have read claims on motorhome forums of instances where water or blown snow gets onto the timing belt or toothed pulleys and freezes up overnight. When you come to start, the belt slips, and if it throws the timing out too far the valves hit the pistons. By then it's too late to just replace the belt. I'm not sure exactly what is supposed to happen, possibly ice between the pulley teeth pushes the belt away from the pulley, possibly one of the cam pulleys sieze and the belt gets dragged round it.
Water ingress is the bane of motorhomes as they are left standing for long periods rather than out and about getting warm and dried out every day. This is exacerbated by the poor design of the Ducato's plastic gutters under the windscreen which often seem to channel water onto the engine rather than away from it !

Hi, :)
not the news you were hoping for..but an answer..,

regarding the water / ice - I believe the bottom pulley, on the crank, IS exposed - so it's POSSIBLE that water has built up on the upper teeth, essentially making it a SMOOTH surface - once the crank is spun on the starter, this smooth area is driven to the bottom where it has limited contact with the belt..

crank is driven - camshaft is not..just for a split second ( but maybe on every revolution of the crank on the starter)

Diesels run at such tight clearances, you've almost ZERO chance of no damage, however the sacrificial design of the valve gear should mean the bottom-end is saved from major impact loads.

hope you get it back in service soon, and the MOT goes o.k.,
Charlie

Thanks Guys for your comments and thanks Charlie for yours I hope the MOT goes smooth it should do with only just over 16 K on the clock, fingers crossed no more starting problems. However expensive it is I will keep the forum updated as I don't want anyone having the same hassle or expense as me. Call out mechanic, Diagnostic test, New starter motor, New camshaft sensor, New Timing Belt kit, Pick to take to garage, Engine out, Head off and sent away and then what ever next.

Apart from the parts fitted in error, :(

I'd be tempted to modify / adapt the lower edge of the timing belt cover , put a kind of LIP / almost like a windowsill - so the water running down it cannot just pool on the sprocket / pulley,
but is forced to drip out of harms way onto the floor / undertray

TBH a decent bead of silicone sealant at a 45 degree angle could duct a lot away..,

Hi guys just to give you an update the motorhome is now running and on my drive, cost a fortune to repair and what a headache almost a new engine however the wife says you can not put a cost on dreams.
