Have a brava 1.4 12v sx.
The problem is it was parked for about 4yrs and now after having a gear problem fixed today, I started the car and it cut out after running for a short while, while I was rev ving the engine. I heard something breaking and decided not to restart right away.
I removed the panel that covered the timming belt (to see if the timming belt was the problem) and the damage was revealed.
It was not the timming belt

something broke off off this wheel with the yellow nut.

some of the bits and pieces still there.

the other bits and pieces that i was able to remove.

What is it that was damage and where can I get it from?
Can the car drive like this with the other bits and peices removed or must the part have to be replace first?
Should I at least start the car or should I wait until the part is replaced?

chances are that the engineis ruined. its going to need a rebuild and some valves worst case scenario.

i would change the belt and pully and try to run it before it stripped it down.

It looks like the remains of a drive belt to me. It's important that you clean away ALL debris from your main timing belt.

It could be the auxilary drive belt that has deteriorated due to lack of use and burst into shreds when you ran the engine. That would be the good news.

Among other things, the aux belt drives the alternator. Check the pulley wheel on the alternator to see if there is, in fact, a belt present.

The best of luck.

"It could be the auxilary drive belt that has deteriorated due to lack of use "

Cambelts deteriorate in the same way. Its why you should change them every 5 years and not just change them based on milage.

Its not a belt is it ?

It looks to me like the teeth off of the tensioner (bit with yellow nut) if youd just heard it break that might not of been so bad, the engine stopping makes it sound like the tensioner went, the belt slipped, the valves got freindly with the pistons.

Tony your right, it is the teeth of the tensioner. Bad luck!

Looks like a new set up and hope all is well, though I would have serious doubts that it will be.

oh sorry hun. First things first- DON'T START IT!
This happened to me, its the cambelt gone.I was driving and it suddenly stopped and yes it was the cambelt.
All the valves were damaged etc and my car had to get towed to the garage.I managed to get discount at a garage through my dads regular custom and it cost £900, but all the head needed changing.Another garage looked at it before and after looking at only 4 of the 12 valves, qutoted me £1200.
Good Luck!! let us know how you get on!

it is not the cambelt or the aux belt it isnt a belt at all.
It looks as if Tony is right, in the pics if you look carefully you can see both the cam and aux belt still in tact.
I am not sure of the name but if tony is right, Is there any one out there who knows the part numbers for the belt and the tensioner or the part thats atually broken if the tensioner does not need to be replace?

I am hoping that the valves and pistons was not as friendly as tony suggested and that the belt did not slipped.

when my cambelt went, it was still in tact and there was bits laying in the bottom exactly the same, with the teeth gone etc.
