so i was driving along at 60mph when my car decided to suddenly lock up, i mean like solid tyre screech to a stop, put it in any gear try and move its solid, put it in nuetral still solid and put my foot on the clutch, the front wheels still dont wanna move, had to take a driveshaft out to get it onto the recovery truck and then home .............. any ideas ?

this sounds like a catastrophically seized Engine or gearbox. if the engine wont turn over with the clutch in assume knackered engine.
does it have any oil in it ?

the differential i would blame for gearbox
Its not uncommon for them to drop a bearing or shaft and next thing you know is its jammed between the gears = solid
If the engine isn't started and isn't turning over with the clutch dipped
i'd be looking along line of possible a dropped clutch?
or jammed starter motor
if he had to remove a driveshaft its seriously bad news

Start looking for a new gear box is my suggestion you have most probably seized the box or as Ziggy said the differential which is all part of the same thing. they don't tend to seize without good reason and if that reason is that its run low/out of gearbox oil then the whole thing is now a very large paper weight, start on Ebay location nearest you
