Danny, where abouts are you located? If you are anywhere near Bradford (west Yorks) my best buds brother in law is THE best gearbox mechanic around. He'll give you his opinion on the problem for free, and will sort you out a dam site cheaper than anyone else could. Hes been in the game 20 years and theres very little he doesnt know. My clutch needed doing and he offered to help me do it and im not really an expert, but we had the gearbox out, a new clutch in and refitted in 2.5 hours. Let me know if you want his help.

at a push maybe I could get more out of it but its a 1.2 for christ sake, it sounds like it will explode ;)

Tony: thatnks for the offer mate but im a bit far away i am in down in bristol. Il get the local mech to have a peek as soon as. cheers all. Danny

ok gonna ring round to ask about getting the 3rd sync done, today anyone have any idea of a rough price that i would expect to pay so i can tell them to feck off should they take the ****.

ITS NOT THE 3RD SYNCHRO!! If its slipping out of gear its another problem. If it was hard to get it into 3rd THEN it would be the synchro.

ok then so its not that. I just need to get it sorted and I dont want a stupid mechanic to just try and rip me of by telling me a load of bull.

You're gonna get shafted either way as taking the gearbox to bits is a long job.

Have you checked that its going all the way into gear?

yes mate it is going all the way in. il probably just try sourcing a re-con box then rather then any messing around, wip it out then 1 back in. any idea of how long this should take in an ideal situation so i can work out cost. cheers Tom mate

As I said a bit earlier me(amateur)and Rick(gearbox bossman) had the gearbox out and back in again in under 2.5 hours for a clutch change. If you are planning on a straight swap i.e. your old box out and a new/recon straight back in again a pro mechanic should not take longer than 2.5 hours. Its not as hard as you think if you have the right tools. I was lucky as Ricks garage at home is well set up with every tool u could need inc airline etc. Do not let anyone charge you longer than 3 hours for fitting, cos if it takes em longer than that they are either bullshitting about the time it took, or were not up to the job and struggled with it for longer than they should of done.

Just got a price back from an internet place i use all the time and they got a box there for £130 obviously re-con but is this any good. cheers boys Danny
