Right ok yesterday as it was my last day off before I went back to work me and the gf decided to go out for a drive and get a bite to eat. I was driving along at no more then 20-25 in third and it just slip right out of gear. A bit shocked all I could do is get it back in and carry on my way. Then later on again exactly the same thing in 3rd at no more then 25 and it went. then again this morning. anyone have any idea what it could be? why is it only happening in third? and what and how much the solution could be? and please dont say the scary word (gearbox) cheers all

Also just to note its a 97 r with 100k and had the clutch changed no more then 10k ago.

Worn syncromesh perhaps?
I have this in 2nd gear.

Tom will be able to help you more I suppose ;)
but for a car with that mileage it wouldnt suprise me if that was it.
mines only done 14k and I have the same problem :(

So I need a new box then, f****** S***, Stupid f****** car, piece of crap. sorry people.
anyway any idea how much for a new 1 and for a re-con, and fitting anyone cheers Danny.
 
you can replace the parts without ditching the whole GB. It's just costly to get the thing out and do the work. Steer clear of FIAT for the work and you should be much better off on all counts!

Got my clutch replaced and some 'exploratory' work done in the GB last year. New 2nd gear sync and 4th gear cog + clutch + labour - just over £300.
 
Just had my gearbox done on my 1.2 not long after the 100k mark. I called fiat for a lauh and they quoted £1100 + VAT just for the box without fitting or £450 + vat for a recon one. Needless to say I didnt go there.

Ended up getting one from a MkII Punto 60 with only 16k miles from a scrap yard for £160 kindly done by bravo_owd_chap

 
ok thats good as i said I had the clutch changed less then 10k ago. so i should be able to get the syncs done for alot less from what your saying. is it worth getting all of them done 1st - 5th.
 
not really since that would just about constitute a new GB! You'd probably be waiting 10 weeks for all those bits too. Not easy to come by TBH.

if it ain't broke....
 
Either the 3rd/4th selector hub is not sliding all the way over or the spring detent is worn or the gearbox is terminally ****ed.

After 100k I'd put money on the first 2.

Either way I'd recomend NOT using 3rd at that low speed no matter how young the car is.
 
Ok so any suggestions. I know it may seem really stupid asking its just I dont want to take it to a garage not having a clue what im talking about, which i dont and them saying my box is fooked and i have to pay £££S getting a new or re-conned one when its not. anything i could do or try. cheers guys for your help Danny

I have to do it because I cant get 2nd gear til I'm below 18mph ;)

It will be putting alot of lateral strain on the gears and the selector when you accelerate. Plus plodding around at
 
i dont really i aint that bad..... i do how ever let it idle in second gear where stuck in traffic then nail it to get away

yep dans my stalker. we take it in turns from week to week to stalk each other gives the other a sense of power for a week u should try it lol

I am always in 5th at 30mph!!! i take it thats a no no then!!!! mine is a 1.8?
