Technical HELP me please

(My car is a 1994 mreg fiat punto)

Hi I'm really hoping you can help me, a few months ago some a***holes decided they would try to help themselves to my fuel but I have anti-syphon so as they were unsucessful syphoning it, so they punctured a hole and left three quarters of a tank of fuel all over the car park, so I had to get another fuel tank couldnt afford the £450 the mechanic wanted so I bought one from a scrappy and got a friend who knows a bit about cars to fit it. (the fuel tank came off another mreg punto)

The problem I'm having is, when i'm going along with the windows open the car fills with the neat smell of petrol :-( my friend took the petrol tank off and had a look and he couldnt find any apparent reason for this, the smell of petrol seems to be getting worse as you can smell it constantly now when not in the car.

Is there a possibility they could of damaged the filler bit? and that could be the reason for the smell?

I really want to keep the car but it seems to be causing me so many problems, if this cant be fixed it will be scrapped :-(

The filler is quite complex. The easiest option is to get to a breakers and get a new fuel filler system and fit that. Get the mechanic to do it. His price would have been steep because he'd have quoted for new parts. If you take him ALL of the stuff he needs it should not be too costly.

In the meantime the car sounds really dangerous not only breathing the fumes but the fire risk.
