Cheers arc, since I've had a new engine put it and it still has the same problem I think it must be something to do with idle control, it's not wire throttle apparantly. It only started after a mechanicc repaired head gasket BEFORE I then bought another engine...so it broke somehow when he was doing the head....

Got a bloke to look at it that seems pretty confident he can fix it even though three garages including the Cambridge fiat dealership couldn't!

Yes it is. All mk2 1.2 16v's are. ;)

Did the new engine come with the inlet manifold, throttle body, etc, or were the parts transferred from the original engine? It wouldn't be the first botched Punto 16v head-job (lazy 'mechanics' will often hack-off the top fixing for the inlet manifold to remove the cam-carrier, or break the small vacuum pipe take-off).

Also has the self-adaptives been reset? (not talking about the phonic wheel learn)

Tried leaving the ignition on for 1 min (doing nothing), then switching off for 1 min? This is a basic reset and allows the throttle body to run it's full cycle of movement.

Ive only got a 1.2 8v! I must of made an error if I said I did it's just a 1.2 8v sporting. Is that still wire throttle?

I have left the ignition on for over a min lots of times, not exactly 1 min though.

I'll ask mechanic if the engine came with these parts as I am unsure, it was delivered to them.

Cheers DannyBoy

:rolleyes::D

If it's an 8v, then it's got a cable. When doing the basic reset you must do both parts (on for 1 min, off for 1 min) otherwise it can't store the data. The timing doesn't have to be exact, just no less.

A common fault on the 1.2 8v was faulty throttle potentiometers which caused the engine to idle at 2-3000 rpm. Need special tools to replace though (Dealer).

Sorry I just realised it's an active sport can't believe I keep making this mistake will edit my original post!

I have looked into this just now and found the following thread:

https://www.fiatforum.com/bravo-brava/64051-throttle-potentiometer-fault.html

Due to the fact I have fixed 8 electric/technical faults do you think it would be worth checking the connections as explained in above thread just in case, as since I got my car back I have had numerous problems I have fixed by just using common sense and checking connections.

I'll need to locate it i'll try googling it unless you could give me an idea of its location?

Cheers

*Edit*

Is the potentiometer attached to throttle body - which is just behind ECU? If so I will do a basic cable check

Done a bit of research itno rev problems going to get someone to look at throttle body/pot and map sensor as others had problem similar and replacement of these cured it.

I take it you have checked the throttle cable movement? The cable on the 8v engines has a small rubber nipple where the inner cable comes out of its sleeve just before the throttle cam. The nipple can come loose and get stuck part way up the groove in the cam, which causes the cable to tighten up and increase revs. Alternatively, the cable could just be adjusted up far too tight. When you look down inside the throttle body with the engine off, is the throttle plate closed right up? If you can see any gaps at all, it may mean the plate is being held too far open for the idle control valve to modulate the idle speed.

Cheers arc, but...

:DJust put new throttle body with new potentiomer on and she's purring now, even did the phonic wheel learn to clear ALL faults and dashboard warnings.:D:D

So happy right now.(y)

Thanks everyone for the help,:worship:

Going to donate another fiver.

Would donate more but I am poor.

All in all quoted £1200 from Fiat Cambridge:devil: for new ECU, locks and keys fitted; 'because a new engine needs new ECU locks and keys.....', and £180 + labour for new throttle body.

Paid £90 to (y)ECUtesting.com(y) for ECU refurb, and £49 throttle body new potentiometer delivered = £139. (Salvo Group)

Saved £1380+ thanks to Fiatforum.
