I was merrily barreling down the motorway when I thought I heard a wierd sort of wind noise. It rapidly got louder and by the time i pulled off the motorway (an mile later) it was really loud and my car sounds like a tractor. I pulled in to a carpark and just as i switched off the engine a 'low oil pressure' warning briefly appeared and disappeared - hasn't been back on since although. I've checked the oil and is still full. The 'knocking' increased when you increase the revs. I've had the cam belt replaced 3 weeks ago (probably done 400 miles since) and done an oil change in january. Any ideas what might be wrong? Is my car doomed??

I'd get it looked ASAP - as I'd imagine it could be related to the recent CAM belt change

Also do you know what oil was used on last change - nothing cheap & nasty I hope ?

i've had it trailered to a garage for them to look at tomorrow but just trying to get an idea if its as bad as i suspect. oil was rock oil 10/40 that my dad uses on his impreza and mr2

Unfortunately I think Morten might be correct in post #3 :(

The 1.8 has a bit of a reputation for early failure due to oil starvation. I gather the oil ways can become blocked which then causes big-end failure - and once seized one will then punch a hole in side of the engine

The good news (if you can call it that) is that your engine is still in one piece - so it could be worse.

Don't know much about Hunt oil but that's where I'd start to lay the blame I think.

Hopefully I'm wrong

Rock oil is a good quality reputable oil used in race
engines. I'd be surprised if the oil was at fault unless
the sump level was low.

Although 10/40 isn't fully synthetic

I just speak of the times of the Ritmo Abarth 130TC (2 litre twincam 8V 130 bhp). This engine often (nearly always) suffered from low oil pressure, and the big end bearings would need replacing regularly - at least ours. But it was noticeable when the bearings started to wear, as there would be play at the piston rod ends, where they were attached to the crank. Minor knocking at first, then louder (especially at higher RPM). A trained ear could spot it at idle.

hi all, thanks for all your comments, I thought i'd just let you know that apparently the oil pump failed which then led to starving the engine and has destroyed the big end. end result is I have had to replace the engine - grrrr.

Apparently this is an unusual thing to happen on fiat engines and even more unusual for the engine computer not to mention it was destroying itself even though it clearly was!

Old adage here is ..by the time a warning comes up its all done and dusted..you just cant beat an oil gauge for stuff like this..which brings me to a point..Old school is still the best ..bloody electronic crap..:bang:
