Hello all, im new to this forum. I have a 1997 cinquecento sporting 1.1, i have only had it a few weeks but recently it has had trouble starting, it is turning over but not firing, i would turn it off, start it again and it would start and run fine! A friend of mine has a punto and she said that when you turn the key there should be a red light come on that looks like a plug or torch shape, she said wait til that goes off then it should start (this is what she has to do), so i tried that and hey presto it starts now, but this morning when i done it it wouldnt start again, it did in the end it was just firing for ages then started up!

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

thanks
Emma.

 Welcome to the forum and the pain and pleasure that is Cinq ownership

A few quick questions to know a bit more about your car

Does the orange keylight go out on the dashboard?
When the car starts does it run OK?
Has the red injector light come on at all when you've been driving?
when was the car last serviced?
are you up to trying to fix it yourself or will you throw it at garage to fix?

It does go out after a few seconds, it does run ok (although when cold it does pull a bit) I have not noticed the light come on while driving. No idea when it was last serviced, but was m.o.td in October. will probably get it in the garage if the problem is something bad.

Any ideas with this info??

thanks
Emma.

The first thing to do would be a service. Make sure all the filters including fuel are changed.

ps Hello and welcome

Cheers for that, i did think about getting it serviced..How much is a service these days??

go for cheap fiat bronze service (£89) or dealer offer (often around £69-99) then get them to read error codes aswell thus saving you £££;)

Unless you know someone with a decent code reader of course.

I'd have trouble forking out £200 for a service on a £400 car.

Here here...its a bit steep, i was thinking it would be around £80-£100...but it needs to be done.

I did say 'less than'.

I don't know the labour rates in your area, but if say you spend £89 on a main dealer service, then what do you get for that.

For starters Alastair Darling gets £13.26 of it.

That leaves £75 for the actual service. Labour rates in the impoverished north are £60 per hour, so thats an hour and quarter maximum, and thats without using any parts.

I assume there is an oil and filter change in that service, so take out workshop oil sales at £5.00 per litre, £15, plus a few quid for a filter then thats less than an hour they are spending on your car.

I can assure you the rest of the time will not be spent servicing the car, it will be spent looking for things that are wrong with the car so that when you come to collect it there is a £500 estimate to repair all that is 'wrong' with it.

Ask your friends to recommend a local garage with labour rates around £30 to £35 and for 'less than' £200 you can have the job done properly.

Is it better to spend 'less than' £200 to make sure your car starts and runs, rather than spend more than that to get recovered from the motorway hard shoulder when it 'fails to proceed'?

Cheers

I suggested this as a alternative to the constant moans of service costs.

However a few points....the dealer will make around £12 on a 'special discount service'....look at it this way the garage would rather make £12 than have techs idle so make use of it!

You 'normally' get oil/filter/air filter & often spark plugs....it would also be naive of me to say that the garage isn't looking for further work but this has its advantages aswell...it alerts you to potenial future faults (be honest who here amoung us regulary checks brake or tyre wear, let alone suspension, oil leaks etc if you dont want the work done just say no...its that simple & you can take it elsewhere to get the work done or do it yourself. If you did decide to get the work (or some of it done) then negotiate after all the car is already on the premesis (probably still in workshop!) and the more things you get done the more you can 'haggle'.Get them to do the difficult stuff leaving you with the easy bit like bulbs, wiper blades etc

Not everyone has the skill/knowledge/ability or equipment to carry out work themselves therefore I believe these types of services (which when you look at the checklist is very comprehensive) are of great benefit to a large percentage of the population.

If your smart you can get a service like this + MOT for £99-£109...how much is a normal MOT thesedays £55? ..now add in your oil change (saves jacking it up at home, making mess of driveway & taking old oil to dump) air filter and you must be looking around £80 so far now add a report/inspection on the 'health' of your car & a service stamp...sorry but to me thats value for money.

I think you'll find that the £12 is after the tech is paid, but of that £60 ish pounds labour charge, some of it goes towards the upkeep of the shiny showroom and the 'standards' imposed by the manufacturer after the end of Block exemption.

Here is the bronze service checklist. Four lines of which are to do with changing the engine oil, and no mention of spark plugs. Not even remove and check. Most people with half a brain would be able to do most of that list. It doesn't even involve removing the wheels.

Check for any body defects
Check operation of lights
Check washers and wipers
Check engine oil
Drain and refill with engine oil
Fit new sump plug washer (where fitted)
Fit new engine oil filter
Check brake pipes and lines
Check exhaust system
Inspect tyres and set pressures
Report on tyre tread depth
Visually check cooling system for leaks
Check anti-freeze content
Check drive belts (excludes cam belt)
Check all fluid levels
Check battery condition
Visually check front brake pads and discs

Still don't see it myself. I can also almost guarantee that it will be the apprentice doing the 'service'not a technician at all.

Why should we ever presume that because you are a girl you can't do a service. If we were to suggest such a thing you would be down on us like a ton of bricks.

You can't have your equality and then not want it, be consistant, if thats possible for a female of the species.

All amateur mechanics start from the same point. Get the book and follow the instructions.

I have to say that I agree with rallycinq on this one, having worked in a fords service dept for 3 years I can honestly tell you that there is no such thing as a cheap main dealer service, there is the book time for service, and an actual time for a service, and yes we were all told to find as much wrong as we could in order to bump up the initial price. Sometimes the hardest thing is too get customers in the door, so a promotion like cheap servicing, or a free winter check, or free brake check, can often drum up a couple of thousands pounds for a dealership. There is no reason why you can get a local independent garage to service the car for you, ask them what parts you need, buy them from your local motorfactors an then get your garage to fit them for you. There is no reason why you cant get this done for about £150, maybe even less.:)
