Punto (Mk1) help for newbi with punto 1.1

I recently bought a fiat punto 1.1 , 1998. it's an old one ..however I need it to do some work.
I'm having a problem with the fuel consumption it's consuming about 12-14/100 Km. Any idea what could be the problems. I had it check by a friend who have a little bit experience with cars, and he said the I should replace the oil, oil filter , fuel filter, leads and plugs! does it seem reasonable? it seems too much for me! anyway I know at least that I should change the oil because it has a really dark color , and I don't have any idea when it have been changed before! any suggestion for the oil type and how much liters it would need???

That'll do for a start. I'd also replace the coolant and thermostat.

I can't get my head round fuel consumption in metric units.

Old car will be happy with semi 10W40 oil. Give it the free wheel test to see if the brakes are binding. If car pulls up then they'll need doing. Exhaust can seriously affect mpg too and is often forgotten about. Both in the baffle and the cat. Tyre pressure, excessive weight will also affect performance. Start with the heart though and give the engine some new blood.

Old car will be happy with semi 10W40 oil. No idea on how much but a 5 litre (standard size) can should be more than enough, just run it nice and hot first then take the sump plug out. The old oil will be much more fluid and drain easier. I wouldn't advise an engine flush treatment though on an old car although some forum members will. It can do more harm than good. Those parts need oil not cleaning. Magnetec does work and will ensure parts are coated with black gold even when you start her cold. Give it the free wheel test to see if the brakes are binding. get a compression test done in case engine worn causing high consumption
