Hi

I recently did a service on my '95 uno fire, but when i got it back after a couple of weeks it was worked on, the carb was flooding. I had it reconed and it was fine for about 2 miles, and started backfiring/losing power and cut out completely, and wouldnt start again. They replaced a small metal (silver with 4 'pins') part on the distrubutor. Once again it was fine for about 2 miles and started 'shaking' back and forth again. it would accelerate for 2-3 seconds and then even with my foot flat on the accelerator it would not increase in speed but 'shake' back and forth like it was gonna stall/cut out completely like the revs would also drop. At least it started again but i had to drive it back with my foot let going of the clutch and then pressing on the accelerator back and forth, obviously to keep the car from stalling. Please inform me on what the problem could be! I really am fedup and I'm getting 1000 different answers!!!
I'm taking it in tomorrow, so I would really appreciate a speedy response, and i dont wanna be ripped off!!! :)
Thanks!!!

First it doesn't make a lot of sense that a car going fine shouldn't have a problem after a service. What did you get done in the service. When something like what you describe happens it is a matter of going back and checking what was done just before the problem showed up.

Does it blow smoke, and look like the fuel mixture is too rich or is it too lean. Does it have a manual choke, if it does does pulling that our make it worse or better. Are there any loose electrical connections that could be making and breaking - I doubt this last one but who knows.

Whatever it is, If you paid for the service, whoever did the service needs to fix it for you at no cost or very little cost.

Read the post again, you said it is flooding, I wonder if a little bit of dirt has got in to the carb somehow.

Hi Rawill. The normal stuff like air filters, plugs, petrol filters and some gaskets, new oil etc... it istnt really blowing smoke, well except the normal bit...The carb was reconed, and some silver thing with pins replaced on the distrubutor, but now the guy said he is sending in the coil and the distributor??? He also says that his service has got nothing to do with the car's performance/current problem. Is he trying to screw me over or could that too have an effect? What are the chances of it being a petrol pump? yeah it was flooding but at least now, that problem is solved! thanks for the reply!

This comment is a real problem if the car did not have a problem like this before you took it in.

If the car was going fine before you took it in then it is over a 95% chance that something has been done during the service that has caused the problem.

I would be very careful of the person who serviced it. See if you can get a second opinion.

I hope JJhepburn or alexGS or other experienced Uno people will come on to give some ideas.

Why "a couple of weeks" ? Did you have it serviced for the simple things like: oil ,petrol, air filter and spark plugs replaced ? - Carb reconditioned, that's understandable - But for a general service (unless your vechile is under warranty) you NEVER have this done by someone else (especially a backyard mech) You learn the basics and do it yourself in future. Now you get the car back - all these expenses later - and there's no joy in having the car back with problems that this guy procclaims he is not liable for ....

Souns like the car is "thirsting" fuel - Your'e right - there could be a thousand things wrong. I suggest you start looking at the simple things like a cracked distributor cap, is the rotor underneath the cap not faulty or worn - spark plug gap settings ok? Take off the air cleaner housing, no loose connections around the carburettor - hoses, pipes and electrical wires? Is the choke working fine? What exactly were replaced on the distributor ?

Where do you stay here in RSA, perhaps I could call you and assist with the bit of knowledge available.

Good luck

Thanks so much for all the advice so far guys! The reason for it taking a few weeks is that is done by someone I know who is clued up more than I am with cars in general, and he can only afford 2-3 hours at a time, we also had to replace some driveshafts that was worn, and some uno parts believe it or not is damn hard to find!!! Thing is that I got it back from the panelbeaters after thet repaired some scratches etc and then it never was the same, Come to think of it I noticed something different on the appearance of the distrubutor back then. So basically there is no one to take it back to, because in sunny SA the panelbeaters are among the most dishonest companies around, and make you sign your life away in paperwork and disclaimers. So before I wanna spend alot of cash on guessing whats wrong, I just needed some info. Barney the guys at the Carb shop also reckons it is the rotor on the dist. and I'm from Jhb.
Thanks guys I REALLY appreciate all the help so far!!!
Keep it comin'

If Barneys tips dont work try these..

If the carb has been rebuilt & is definately flooding (what makes you think its flooding exactly?), I`d check the choke cables been set properly (check the top butterfly is fully open when the lever is pushed fully in), if that was fine I`d take the top off & check for dirt that may be blocking the needle valve, & the float level as they may have overlooked it.

I`d also be checking the vaccum advance doesnt leak (the bell shaped thing on the front of the distributor), that is unlikely to cause a missfire unless the distributor timings seriously out & the plugs were gapped wrong, however its a common failure & seriously affects performance & fuel consumption.

Did they change the timing belt? This can cause backfiring if they didnt tension it properly has may have jumped a tooth.

The silver 4 pin thing on the dizzy is the ignition module by the way.
