Hello everybody

I am a 17 year old student living in South Wales who wishes to purchase a Fiat Panda 4x4 (classic) as my first vehicle. One reason is because they are probably the cheapest insurance quote as my mums Peugeot 205 CJ is way too much to ensure. Money is an iddue for my family :(
Another reason is that my mum once has a Seat Marbella which i quite liked and know that it's identicle to mk1 pandas:D

So I am looking for a deal on ebay at the moment for a good panda 4x4 that will last me many years. I have joined this forum in order to achieve this goal.

Thanks in advance :)

welcome:) and great choice of starter classic.
my thoughts for what they're worth..if money is an iddue:p then go for a 2wd rather than a 4x4. Everybody loves the novelty value of the tiny tough off roader but that means the prices are rising for a decent example while the standard models are easier to get on a budget. Once you've got one quite a a chunk of the mechanicals are 4x4 specific too and therefore pricier than you'd expect and more difficult to source. Finally the extra weight of the 4x4 gubbins means the standard models will do better on the fuel consumption. If you need, or will use, the 4x4 capabilities then they are a great little car but if you don't, or won't, is it worth the extra?
best option..most of the 4x4 owners on here seem to have a 2wd aswell;)
happy hunting.
Andrew.

Hi and welcome......Andrew is spot on!!!!...sorry to burst your bubble but just look at some of the 4x4 threads to see what an expensive hassle a 4x4 can be!!

Want fun, reliability and cheap Panda ownership go for a 2wd injection model...as he says im one of the guys that has both....(y)

Good luck with your search and dont forget to let us know how you get on....

:yeahthat: Andrew has summed it in one and Kev has confir
ed it.

We're luck to have several Panda's, inc a Sisley 4x4 and can confirm that I'm glad I had a 750L as my first car for my first year of driving. I'm 19 and a full time student doing a degree and know that I wouldn't be able to run my 4x4 panda without the two jobs I have! I'd recomend a 2wd for now. Out of interest have you done any insurance quotes for a panda?

Jon.

P.s, welcome.

Hello and welcome!!

:yeahthat:

Basically same as the above. I've got a '94 CLX 2wd which is my first car (and I love it) but I just gothold of an insurance write off Sisley that I'm gonna restore over the next year or so... 4x4's are a serious expense and ballache finding parts for. For example I need a couple of front shocks and hub carriers for mine and they are different to the 2wd ones; can I find them? can I bo!!ocks! Also they are likley to cost me over twice as much as 2wd ones.

Get a fuel injected 2wd and have a laugh flying around in a tin can and when you are ready try and find a good 4x4.

All the best and good luck, Luke. (y)

Thank you all for the warm welcome. One of the only reasons i chose 4x4 is because insurance is a little cheaper, but reading your replies, maybe in the long term it is not. Also, because it would have been a hoot fitting off-road tyres passing a huge flashy 4x4 (that is so common these days) in wet weather :)

The latest insurance quote for a standard 2wd 1L panda is about £1400 inc Pass Plus on my own. My parents have not got a good claims discount. I think my father has 1 year because for around 20years at least he has driven company cars and my mother had a bad patch around 2 years ago. On that basis my father thinks that it wont be that much cheaper :O

I will have to nag him to telephone his insurance company and see how much it costs for me to be a named driver on his policy. It will be much cheaper no matter how long their claims bonus is won't it ??

Thanks

Hey dude!

Welcome to the mad house! Many year ago I was in your predicament and needed a funky cheap car. It's blasphemy on here but I do own both ;) so have you looked at a Cinquecento or Seicento. They are MUCH cheaper than any MkI 4x4 that is anything other than a heap.
If you really want a Panda tho, defo go with a 2 wheeler! (y)

2 wheeler? Assume you mean..

In a much earlier thread I see a Panda 4x4 propshaft, nominally attached to a wonderbeast of a rebuilt 4x4.

Are you getting others to buy 2wd so you can get all the 4x4's?
If so its a brilliant idea.

4x4 owner Pandamaniac.

Hi again Blurredman, as far as insurance goes I recomend you start on your own policy as soon as your on the road, rather than using your parents policy for 'FRONTING' and possibly getting cheaper insurance.

I've been there and done that and trust me when I say it does you no favours. Appart from the fact that you won't be earning no claims, meaning that when you eventually get your own policy it will still be costly, but in the event of a claim things can get rather messy, and thats if they don't figure out whats been done and choose to void the policy.

Not trying to scare you off, but its one thing that I've unfortunatly got to much of a personal knowledge and extreamly bad experience in!

I saved a lot of money doing that in my first few years of motoring... but it is risky if you need to claim!

You might be too young to be accepted but look into classic car insurance. The car doesn't have to be that old, I had my first car a '94 Lada Niva group 6 insurance on a classic car policy with Firebond now Footman James for about half the price of normal insrance. Classic insurance means you are limited to less than 10,000 miles a year, and technically you don't earn a no claims discount, but I eventually changed to a normal policy and they gave me the no claims anyway when I asked.

Hehe. It's from Abe's Oddysee actually :p

You are also 17? Have you got a 750 then? I need some insurance help. Its confusing. Makes me want to buy a few acres of land and just drive no MOT, insurance nor tax to waste money on :)

I have tried many comparison sites:
comparethemarket, moneysupermarket, gocompare and confused and have found that moneysupermarket is cheaper by far on some occasions..
