Hi everyone,
over the last week I've been trying to sort out my wife's 02 Punto mk 2 1242 8v and have dipped into your forums on & off to glean some useful advice - thanks!
I've joined now and would like to ask for some more support as I'm about to change the ECU for a new one and I would very much like to do this as prepared as possible!
Firstly background!
The Punto has done 50k and over the last few weeks I've changed the thermostat, waterpump, new headgasket, cam belt & tensioner, plugs, leads, etc. I struggled with the timing at first but then after reading the forums - thanks again! - found the little cover in the bellhousing (tucked away under one of the hoses) and got it sorted. The dashboard light is constantly on and it was still running really rough and lacked any pull. By now the MoT was up and it failed for emissions and was told that one of the ignition coil packs was not working causing lack of servo too - hardly surprisingly. I changed one of the coil packs and it was ever so slightly better, but still not right, so I decided to get a full diagnostic test done at our local dealer - and after an hour and £45 later was informed that it's probably the ECU as "it is generating random fault codes" and was advised this would be around £500 to replace . . .
I can't possibly afford this kind of money so have managed to find a brand new one for around £100 which I'll pick up tomorrow.
So, before I fit the new one in, is there anything I should do to reprogram it to the car - I'm thinking key codes, immobilser, etc?
Is it a plug & play operation, ie just refit and the new ECU "learns" the new codes from the existing car electronics?
Is it likely that the engine management light will go out or will I need to do the sonic / phonic wheel calibration (wait until warmed up then rev to 5-6K 3 times malarkey) to get rid of it?
Is there anything else that's relevant that anyone can suggest to help me try and get this working again with the minimum expenditure and grief?
ALL ADVICE VERY GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!:worship:
