Evening everyone, just joined, have owned my 2005 Multipla JTD 115 Dynamic for a year and kept meaning to join, now I finally got round to it! Previously owned a Mk2 Punto 1.2 and a 2006 Grande Punto 1.2, and then I had a Vauxhall Signum, bad times.....
Anyway, anyone know of any threads relating to a simple fix for the useless spare wheel winch under my car, I know there's loads of problems with them, mine was attached fine until last weekend and had never been used but I took it off to see what state it was in, and now it won't go back on (spare wheel in boot now), I don't want an expensive new part just wondered if anyone had their own methods of re-attaching it? Thanks in advance :)

Hi

The repair that I instigated was quite simple. I took the whole device off from the car (4 bolts at edge of wheel) and then cut the wire from the wheel holding end, and got the angle grinder to cut of the section that protrudes from the wheel, where the winching mechanism is.

At the corner where the cable runs in the middle of the wheel, I used a chisel to open the folded metal ends, and pushed a length of all thread through it, so that the wheel is held by this. I used a nylock nut at either end to wedge the allthread against the body of the wheel carrier, which then left a length of all thread which is what I use to hold the wheel to the car with.

I re-bolted the mechanism to the car, and took the wheel holding end and opened the middle of it up with a chisel, to allow the all thread to pass through it. I then held the wheel up to the frame, put this modified end over the thread, and then wound a nut onto the all thread, and as they say in sausage-eating-surrender-monkey-country, et voila!

The result is a manual spare wheel holder, which you have to access from below, but at least it is now guaranteed to work year in, year out! My original holder was seized up when I got it. I used a short M8 nut, bolt and rubber washer to block the hole in the boot floor, too.

This, although a basic solution, works well for me, and you can't see my handy work from anywhere but flat on your back below the car!

I hope this is of use.
