General Held to Ransom by Fiat

........but........aslong as they can afford the access top tech information, the diagnostic equipment & training to support that.

Then they ( the independents) can turn off the service light.....

What about DIY `owners` such as myself though?

I was talking to a dealer about this recently ( not going to name the marque)
and it seemed very similar to this analogy, on a usenet forum of which I was once a member.

There was a well known repairer, of mechanical watches and he used to regularly post on one of the webs horology forums.

Basically, he had developed a `proprietary attitude` over the years, to the watches that were being sent to him for repair. Although he never actually said it, they were `his` watches and he was critical of owners actually wanting to open the case back, let alone try to service it themselves.

He was eventually lampooned to the extent that he had to leave the forum. Even then at that late stage he totally failed to grasp that the watch was the `property` of the owner, despite his self evident skills at watch repair.

By `property of the owner` I mean more than the obvious outright ownerhip of property in legal and societally accepable terms , but also the right of the owner to totally specify and refuse anything at all done to his property.

Regarding cars, dealers and service lights,
Its a good argument that with a new car, warranty obligations mitigate this situation. But as an example ( with reference to our watch repairer) how often is a software update applied during an in warranty service without the customer giving permission?
(To me, `ownership` means obtaining permission, to act otherwise means exerting some form of `proprietal right`, that does not exist)

To conclude,
Regarding locked, service/oil deg lights. Are not the manufacturers themselves imposing proprietary rights on who can service the car, for the duration of its service life?

Its not as though technically it HAS to be like this, a £3/5,000? service tool linked, that is. As we all know, a more complex system of turning off this light has been done with seemingly no other reason other than to apply control.. on the *Owner*

Regards:)

well what would you expect the dealer to do? the service light is an idiot light so owners realise it needs done.
remember there are plenty of owners who assume servicing is all that is needed on a car.
if it was easily turned off then cars would be getting sold as 'serviced'

Was talking to good mate (runs independent garage) today about this,his response was..(quote from memory!);

Thats nothing, you cant do anything to a merc without needing dealer (even changing brake fluid) & we (garage) cant even do alot of brake pad changes on audi's etc as you need diag equipment to reset callipers so they(cars abs) know where they are"

As for ownership, sure its your car (or finance company?) & you can do what you want with it but you cant expect sympathy it the event of a warranty claim. It's no disrespect to the cars owner (who like yourself oilrag is no doubt more than capable) but does the warranty department know this.Unfortunally there are to many people who are not as knowledged as yourself...I have seen audio setups tapped into CAN wiring etc resulting in damaged components...you cant expect Fiat or any other manufactuer to pay out in this case due to failings of the owner.

Both mine ( well.. ours). I wouldnt expect the manufacturer to pay out and as you know, I let the dealer service for the first 2 years.
But the car could have a further 12 years life or so after warranty.....

Accept all your points in this post T, but still clinging on to DIY after all these years..
I can`t imagine you, yourself, being different to this if you worked outside the automotive industry?

Nice article in recent computeractive mag.
All about connecting your car to your laptop. Seems there's a few bits of diagnostic software out there on this ere t'interweb as well as some to buy.
Reckon it'll be a while before Fiat allow us plebs to extinguish ourt own warning lights.

My son & his mates all use a trick off the internet to diagnose fault codes on their Corsa's,
it simply involves using a bent paperclip lol, this then activates the onscreen fault code flashes to compare against a list of possible faults.

I bet the examiner `dreams` in its silicon way,of locking the whole engine bay down and just having a tiny flap for us to add screenwash. :D

I cant see why anyone uses dealers at all. They are very expensive first service 2000 miles £200 very expensive oil and filter. Car engine oil OVERFILLED! six small scatches. Faults on car never found by examiner after eight visits to garage.A far as i can see they ask for huge amounts of money for sub standed work by teenage kids that are supposed to be trained mechanics on poorly built unreliabe cars. Cannot understand why people on this forum rave about fiat! brand new fiats with electrical problems all over this forum.P eople sellin because of problems! is this what we have come to expect and accept!!!

obviously this was when i first got car!!! we are now 18 months on or so and abs still flashes up everyday and everybodys attitude will change from first impressions to 18 months later would you be happy buying a new car for faults to show up only to be told sorry nothing we can do? or am i missing something perhaps you think its acceptable! If you look through this forum lots of fairly new to new with probs this should not be so with the price that these cars cost. and i will point out that this is my opinion on my doblo no one elses and this is what this forum is for isnt it !!

If they can't fix your car and it's still under warranty they should just replace the car, no questions.

Yes it is, your very first post with the new car shows how pleased you were to have bought it and to have bought a Fiat.

Its surely obvious to us all that your change of attitude to the marque has been brought about by the experience of ownerhip?

Maybe that was what luvduvs was trying to point out in contrasting your first and last posts?
Hope things improve for you.

So it started off so good then went downhill & your *****d off,is that what your saying?

ALL faults can be fixed! I have seen some unbelievable faults (on all makes of car) that always get sorted in the end. Some obviously faster than others dependent if they are very intermittent or not.

Your distrust of dealers is obvious throughout your postings and I gave you advice 2 months ago,,,,,

1) examiner records all sessions automatically, its stored on the hard drive so the printout is available.

2) recorder function will of caught your problem cphawk

Yes your correct you dont have to put up with it but hijacking posts as far back as feburary wont solve anything! You could have had this sorted along time ago if you follow the advice below;

If your not happy with the level of service at your dealer try another or request a field engineer has a look at the car. They are there to provide a service & to get your car repaired. You must however be prepared to leave your car for a few days so go & speak to your dealer & request them to bring in fiat engineer, arrange a courtesy car then post back what they find.
