General head tightening question

My Porter and my Autodata CD both say tighten head bolts 30Nm, then two stages of 90deg for the 1108 engine

How come then, for the Punto 1108 engine, its a stage of 20Nm, then 30Nm, then 2 x 90deg, I thought it was the same engine?

I was looking at my torque wrench, and it only starts at 40Nm

You need a different torque wrench! Your toolkit seems to have been designed for Diesels!

How come? GOK, but the Punto way is marginally safer.

Same result, just an additional step, 20Nm is not a lot anyway.

your telling me!! its a normal 1/2" drive one

I am able to borrow another though.

30Nm seems very low though

Don't forget they're only 9mm bolts!

Yeah, as said, the additional step helps. It reduces the risk of warping, or tightening part of the head first. Often gasket kits come with other different instructions lol

You could do a 5,10, 15,20,25,30 sequence if you liked as long as you do the two 90 degree turns.

Also if you put a tourqe wrench on a bolt after its been tightened properly, its at a high torque. Those two 90 degree turns do a fair bit

I have been told a tip this evening that I should give the head 10 mins between each step to allow the gasket to compress, has anyone else heard of this? ta

Won't do any harm, I suppose.

In the old days, on some engines, there was a tightening sequence, followed by a running period, then a retightening.

I remember that, old austins etc, with cast iron heads

Head was fitted today, all is going well, getting pics along the way to make a new guide when I am done

Just got to fit the cam belt and alternator belt, put some oil in, and then get it running.

ETA guide, probably tuesday

The guide is nearly fully written, been writing it as I go along when I get back to my pc to view and sort the pics, just that final bit to do as I mentioned earlier..

yep!! you are right kristian, when it came to the second stage of the 90 deg, I kept thinking "its gonna snap the bolt!" wow, it is tight isnt it!! my arm is still sore
