General Head Gasket

your problems probably the cheap £8 headgasket lol mine blew through a while back get a genuine one for £20 and bolts were £38 all genuine :) yh for tensioner i either get circlip pliers or hook 2 allen keys in and use one against the other for leverage lol never in all my years seen anyone use a gauge for any tensioner you can tell when its right...dont over tighten you will get a squeak aha

Thanks for the advise guy's, but this is the first time I have done a head gasket, and the bit I'm not happy with, is the timing part, hence the questions.

good to know is
Remember these 8v engine are non-interference so your not gonna break anything like on most cars.

Got the head gasket set, and ordered a belt tensiong tool (at a reasonable price) just waiting for recon head to arrive today.

so the punto should be running by the end of the weekend, last famous words, and know my luck! well say no more, in the past three years two punto head gasket gone, my punto not long ago I scrapped, wife head gasket doing now, mondeo written off by two A*****E drivers, peugeot 406 turbo blown replaced still got problems, hence the fiat being the easest job to be done, is why I am doing it.

Hi guys,

it's not working, the finger and thumb method for tensioning the cam belt.

I going to need the Load(daN) and Deflection(mm) setting for the tensioning gauge.

sounds crazy but this doing my head in, as I have a very strong grip and I can turn the belt through 90 degrees easy, so over tensioning the belt, got my 15 yrs old son to do it and I can use my thumb and little finger to do the same.

so the gauge is my only help here.

Thanking you in advance.:worship:

If you can borrow the kit, see here.

I always used a wrench or something to apply the tention. Wedge it between the tentioner and a hard point on the engine.

Put the belt over the crank and camshaft pulleys. Make sure it sits tightly in the teeth. Use your wrench you apply pressure to the tentioner and tighten the tentioner.

Now turn the cam pulley anti-clockwise so that the crank pulley also turns, making the belt at the front tight but slackening the tentioner side.

Reapply pressure to the tentioner and retighten.

This will tention the belt evenly. As far as how much pressure to apply, don't go in like chuck norris. if you can twist the belt 90 degrees then it's probably about right.

had to put the old head back on, the head sent to me had no temp sensor hole at back of head cam belt side.

noticed this after installing it and that was one of the last things to do so a couple of hours wasted.

:bang:

just need a fuel fill and oil change.

that's the job for Sunday.

Failed the MOT on both rear shocks, changed within half an hour, and passed the MOT, Taxed, now back on the road after more than three years standing waiting for me to do the head, wish I had done it sooner!

Thanks for all your advise, Guys
