Technical Head Gasket Faliure? Compression and Symptoms Inside :)

just checked again, all the pressings on top of those parts are the same orientation that they were before it went in, so I presume they are on ok..

I'm hoping, prob for the only time in my life, that you are right and i got a crap head gasket. ;)

Just a bit of diagnostics tonight as im knackered lol.

  • All drainage oil ways clear to the sump. (y)
  • All drainage oil ways clear in head (as if they could block lol) (y)
  • Oil spray bar in head ok from bottom of head (blew with a straw, and played spray holes like a flute ;) ) (y)
  • Water ways in head all clear and working (y)
  • Plenty of oil in head again, so oil pump outlet from block to head must be ok.

Now the real confusing part

In the block, all the big water holes around the cylinders are fine.

All the small waterways near the cylinders are fine....apart from one!

the waterway in question is in the centre of the block, at the rear of the clyinders. Its BLOCKED! but not by crap, but by metal...the block lol.

It goes down about 1-2cm, and then comes to a stop. No side outlet, and the bottom is domed like the drill bit never went furth enough down! the gasket has a hole for it, the head has a working hole for it, but the bloack isn't playing games lol. Is this normal, or a manufacturing error?!

It lasted 53K so it;s not a major concern if its wrong, i'll leave it blocked, but seems very odd.

To summarise though, apart from that one odd "feature", all the pathways look good, so I'll refit tomorrow and hope it works the second time.

One thing to note, i got an after market kit (spi it appears, but only inlet gasket differs) and this one has a bead of sealant/silicone, around the edge and oil ways, whereas the FIAT one didn't!

Sorry if your all really bored now lol :D

Update :)

The blocked coolant hole was a machining error! I drilled a further 1-2mm and it popped straight through into the main water way as the others were. Guess the robot was having a bad day ;)

Talking of bad days ;)

New gasket fitted, new bolts, new oil and oil filter, new coolant again, fixed the HT lead, got it all back together, run it for about 10 miles and there are some oil drips on the sump. :bang:

It's dark and I'm cleaned up now, so I'll ave to investigate tomorrow. I hope its from the oil filter somehow, but if its from the gasket again, I'm gonna cry, either the block needs machining, or I have a cracked block or head. I'll check on Monday if they actually pressure tested it, I'm sure they would though, and it visibly looks fine.

What an annoyance :)
