Technical Handbrake problem

Hi all
Handbrake has gone bust!
The cable is still intact as it still holds the car when holding it up yet it won't stay up, the click has disappeared and it seems to not want to stay on the teeth. The button isn't stuck or anything. Anyone else had this? Going to take it apart sometime later this week.

It may sound daft , but I have seen handbrake levers that are bent from pulling towards the driver for so long that the mechanism jams inside the press button tube.
