Hi Everyone i have a problem with handbrake on o/s rear Punto 2006.
I have replaced both cables and fitted new shoes slackened handbrake off and adjusted shoes up manually as auto adjusters dont seem to be doing the job.
Ground the lip off the drum both sides then adjusted handbrake cable up to correct tension.
But the o/s still is not holding enough, n/s is is perfect,It have watched while someone pulls the handbrake on and the lever is moving fine and there doesnt seem to be any excess wear on the leaver.
You really need to pull the handbrake on to maximum to make it hold on o/s and my daughter struggles to do this.
Anybody have any ideas what else i can try ??
thanks for reading

Does the lever on the back of the rearmost shoe (to which the cable attaches) return FULLY to its stop when the handbrake is released? I've had similar problems with my daughter's car and one of the levers was a bit seized on its pivot, which meant it never quite returned fully. That in turn, meant that it was losing leverage against the shoe.

Also, have you adjusted the brakes up until they're JUSt binding and then backed them off a tad? They need to be ALMOST binding (certainly a slight resistance when the drum is turned by hand) in order to work.

I had same as above, if lever doesn't return self adjuster can't work. The lever pivot on the shoe must be free.

Hi Yes the shoes are aligned correctly and both levers are back on their stops and moving freely as they are new shoes and levers.
Also adjusted them up till nearly binding then released a bit off.
The lever is moving when handbrake is applied but just doesnt seem to be grabbing the drum enough.
I might try swapping the drums to see if the problem moves to the other side and if so will need to buy new drums as i had to grind a fair lip off them before i fitted the new shoes.
thanks for your reply.

Hi I tried swapping drums but know joy also swapped auto adjusters over but still the same im beging to think the drums are both quite worn. Not sure why one side is better than the other but can anybody suggest where to buy 2 new drums.
Auto parts seem really expensive at £67 each ?? anybody suggest any other place for cheaper parts.
Thanks for reading.

You mentioned in your first post that the adjusters don't seem to be doing their job. Have you taken these apart & really cleaned & lubed them up, after refitting when everything's working, you should pump the brake pedal 10/15 times this should do the trick, but without physically being there & seeing how the system is performing, I'm only guessing.

Hi i will give that a try tomorrow but they do seem to be really adjusted up well,The lever on the shoe moves far enough when handbrake is pulled but the shoes hardly move only very slightly ? just seems like the lever moves a lot before the shoes start to move to me.
I know its hard to say without seeing it but i will have another go tomorrow.
thanks for your advice

Thing is, you've said new shoes & cables fitted, in this instance your adjuster should not be adjusted right up, there should be plenty more thread to go if you know what I mean.

Without seeing your work, It's guess work on my side. There are only a few reasons why your rear brakes do not function properly, the adjusters have to be very free to do their job. Best of luck.

I must say, I've been a bit disappointed by my daughter's since I changed the shoes (and one drum). They're "OK" but not great, and the handbrake still comes up nearly 10 clicks for a full application. Something like 5 or 6 for most normal use, yet if I adjust the shoes up any more, they just bind and the drums start to get hot. Very strange...
