General handbrake clicks!!

Hi everyone, I have had a look on the search function but I am still getting used to it and couldn't find anything specifically to the clicks the handbrakes makes. Recently I tightened up my handbrake cable as it was not holding the car at all, but when I go to pull my handbrake now it only clicks once even though it has the full movement of the handbrake. The handbrake works fine. I was just wondering what would stop the handbrake from clicking and how can i fix it?
any help would be fantastic!!

On;ly time I've ever had that, the cable had failed on one side and only one wheel was locking.
