hi folks
just a little help please as my heads not in gear
car failed mot as rear brakes not balance 29% - 50%
replaced drums as large lip on them
replace 1 brake shoe (lead shoe passenger side) others all good
took brake adjusts back to start position

you can hear the adjusters moving, (click)
with car in air and wheels off handbrakes on full 4 clicks the drums hold tight
when its on the ground I can move the car

should I strip down all the rear brakes & clean reassemble
should I rough up new drums with grit paper

just falling about in dark at moment

hi, assuming you've degreased all parts correctly , then you shouln't need to emery things!!,
personally I would expect the drums to lock in 2 clicks,

slack off handbrake,
slide off 1 drum,
then see how free it feels passing over the shoes, should be VERY LITTLE free play,

then refit and do the same on the other side - look for a difference,

you can adjust up either side no problem,

as long as they don't RUB , then I would go tighter BOTH side - as it's all got to bed-in yet..!!,

Hi,

take off 1 drum - look for "clearance" between it and shoes,
refit - and do same to other side,
then adjust them up manually to get a balance,( press the footbrake too to get a "Self-centre" action )= you can go pretty close - as long as they don't rub / bind, ( it's all got to bed-in yet !! ),

REPOST - as the 1st seemed to Disappear..!!

thanks for comments, I give it another go today
reason I replaced only 1 brake shoe was the rest were like new, I must have replaced them sometime before,

If you replace drums there done as a pair and all 4 shoes

Its like your trainers been worn out - but buying 1 new one....

did you clean new drums with brake cleaner
Did you slack the cables right off on the internal adjuster
once drums are rebuilt up press on the brake pedal till it stops clicking

The adjust the internal till its not dragging the rear shoes and you have a hand brake

it does not matter how they look:bang: you change them all. Its called doing the job right

Shoes looking new and one been worn down is a sign of the shoes not working correctly
The friction spots need a good clean spot of brake/copper grease and yearly cleaning and inspection

Ensure one side of the piston isnt seized badly either

Did you
A - Clean the friction spots on the backplate?
B - did you de-glaze the drum for the new pads to bite into?
C - Did you set the In cabin adjuster to Super slack before setting the new shoes to 0
D - When pressing in pedal how many clicks are you getting?
E - Remember, some have a rear load sensor, so it may mean the shoes aint adjusting if its got its bump in the air

look on the rear axle - you cant miss it

It basically allows the rear brakes todo more work when the car is loaded to help with stopping

If you have a sensor and you raise it up and support on body instead of axle it means the valve (sensor) is shutting alot of fluid off
