you have to search for something, then the top hits will be paid by for the people they link to i reckon

Exactly that.. Works exactly like google with the sponsored links (which generates money which this search engine puts towards planting Trees)

So, to be environmentally friendly, and get the best results, go to http://www.ecocho.com/, and search for google.com, then search for what you REALLY want

Ah I see..makes sense now! But does that mean that results from a search may not be sorted by relevance but by the premium they have paid to ecocho.com?

No it means only the 'Sponsored Links' generate money and are displayed right at the top of the results in the 'Sponsored Links' box. All the other results are just like google (it actually uses google / yahoo). They get a small bit of money if the links are displayed and more still if someone click on them.
