Grande Punto 1.9 Multijet humming in 5th gear.....?

Hiya

My Grande Punto is making an intermittent humming noise in 5th gear, which sounds a bit like a change of road surface (though I know it isn't that)

It's a regular sound which speeds up as I speed up, it's quite slowly intermittent, so I'm sure it isn't anything to do with the wheels/bearings etc.......

It doesn't make this sound in any other gear.........am I getting early signs on my gearbox on it's way out?!

My car has dome around 55,000miles btw.....

Any ideas?

It's more likely speed related rather than gear related so you hear it at a higher speed in 5th, my money is on a wheel bearing, quite common usually rear.

Hmmm maybe a more sinister cause then... 5th gear bearing problem or chipped teeth on the 5th gear itself.
