Found out my 6 year old niece has been searching, shall we say, inappropriate things...

What good web blocking software is there to block these?

Ideally I'd like to block the websites but also keywords as they are being typed in.

I'm trying out K9 at the moment, any others that are good?

Cheers, I'll look into that one.

at 6 they should not be allowed on pc unless responsible person is sitting next to or behind them

We don't have enough time to be sat with her permenantly, she talks about these things to her friends in the playground. They're learning too young.

its scary to think 6 year olds can even use internet even more so what shes looking up

can you just block her account from the internet assuming she has an account

if not then put a password on it so she can only go on when she can be supervised

I can block her from it all together but she need it for her homework and stuff, she usually uses it in my office next to me so I can keep an eye on her, when she isn't near me she only uses it for short times and I check the internet usage after.

She has her own account on a domain network.

i cant believe the school are setting kids homework which require the internet! but thats a whole other subject

its definitely worth setting the search options to strict on google (i think other engines do it as well)

if your running vista you could also turn on parental controls in control panel for her account. the normal setting will block pornography and any mature content.. the high setting will block anything apart from content suitable for children

there is nothing wrong with kids at primary school using the internet, ive been using it since i could type/read, back in the days of 28k (even less but cant remember what speed?) i used to surf, do homework, look at pr0n and so on. At the age of 8/9 i built my first computer which i had in my room and i used to carry the spare phoneline extension into my room to dial up.

Ahh the good old days!

Kids are going to learn it at some point, whether they learn it now or in 5/10 years its all the same, kids are growing up quicker nowadays and with technology flying along like it does the schools and kids will always try to keep up with it.

There is nothing we can do about it!

K9 automatically uses strict searching on all search engines, if it doesn't know a search engine it will block it.

Windows XP but I'll look into it.

then restrict the times to when you can, its the only 100% safe way

I've restricted in up to 8pm just to get her in bed lol.

My 4yr old has been using the internet since she turned 3 tbh. I just took all the measures I could to begin with. Windows 7 built in parental controls do the trick along with strict google search filter.

She's been using it since about 3 too.

You're right, they will learn it eventually but I'm trying to block it for now.
