Hi,
New to this forum, I own a 96 Bravo. My timing belt went last week. At the very least I reckon I will need valves and a head.

Considering the mileage of the engine I might be aswell dropping in a new engine. Now the problem is that it's hard to get good quality, warrantied parts in Ireland. I don't know if reconditioned parts can be got at all!

The standard approach seems to be - scrapyard pulls engine out of car thats been sitting in yard, you fit it and have a few days to test it out.

If I'm ordering from the UK I would have to have some sort of guarantee for x months or y miles.

If anyone has contact numbers for reputable suppliers of engines I would be very grateful. If they have experience of couriering stuff to Ireland that would be handy.

The various engine/parts search engines don't seem to work without valid UK postcode, phone number, and sometimes a reg number. What reg letter corresponds to 96?

alright mate i had the same prob couple months back and bought a recon engine off wagstaff autos in humberside tel number 01977 663954 was 350 gbp delivered and has three months guarantee i have had no probs and they even sent me a oil seal when it went last week i would defo recomend these guys

Cheers,
Will keep them in mind. Also got a reply from Trent's in Poole, Dorset. Salvaged - 390gbp including delivery in UK.

When I rang around locally:
Me: Hi, any Fiat Bravo engines?
Breaker: The 1.4 is it?
Me: Ya, do you have one?
Breaker: No good ones left, they're a popular engine.

Not a good sign!

popular

i think there popular coz they keep going pop or the type of person that buys the 1.4 doesn't maintain it and it goes pop

1.4 is worst one they made for the bravo/brava

can't you get a 1.2 engine and put that in.....would it fit etc......if it would then its time to upgrade!

Re: popular

the 1.2 would fit but you would also need a gearbox ,ecu ,fuel lines, etc any more info you need just ask and i will do my best to help you

Re: popular

Yup, 1.2 engine would be a nightmare to transplant - considering what I could pay for another used car. The car is not modded in anyway so I don't have enough spent on the rest of it to justify the pain of fitting a 1.2.

Cambelt went with 50,000 on it - would have got it changed next month, honest!

Re: popular

1.4 is popular replacement engine because they're the most common old bravo engine? Especially in Ireland. Very few of the higher powered early bravos around. So 1.4's here would have high enough mileage, for a FIAT anyway ;)

Update: the tensioner broke first, not the belt. Estimate from mechanic (hasn't looked inside yet but based on a chat with someone who fixed one last week)
-6 valves give or take
-A few rockers
-Belt + tensioner (waterpump? is the waterpump off the timing belt in the 1.4?)
-Labour
Approx 600-800 euro (400-550 GBP)

Considering the gamble tring to find a decent engine in Ireland, is it better the devil you know?

Fix it? or replace it?
Found an engine locally with 70K, God knows how long it's been sitting there. No guarantee -"Start her up and see how she sounds" - 350euro,233GBP
