im getting a service done sometime soon, what do services usually involve the mechanic doing and how much should i b looking to pay?

Oil,Plugs,Filters (air and oil)Fuel filter if you want to go further.
Check all the belts for wear.
Check the tyres (pressure and wear) and check the brakes and replace if needed.
Check the water and other fluids check for leaks all over.
I personally check all the electric connections and lamps.
I'd do it myself if i were you but if you want to pay someone then ask a local mech to quote for the main stuff and check the rest yourself.
Oil the hinges and locks too.

The maintainance booklet that comes with the handbook usually details the things that the service will look at. There are usually 2 or 3 types of service, eg a minor service and a major service, and other exceptional items are changed as service items when due. Its all done on mileage and age. eg cambelt is due for change at 70,000 miles or 5 years (varies from model to model). Anti freeze is usually every 2 years, seat belt pretensioners is every 7 years (but no-one bothers).
You will be suprised at how little is actually done in a standard service, and appalled at the cost. Watch out for 'standard' charges such as charging for refilling the washer bottle, when its already full. What type of service you need will depend on the previous service history. If you are not sure when things have been done before, it might be better to get a full service, and specify other things as well such as antifreeze, and even brake fluid.
But the maintainance booklet is a good place to start as this tells you the service interval and what is recommended.

I personally do my own servicing, top up fluids, clear air filter, change oil etc. Its not worth paying a garage unless you know something is wrong & needs fixing/replacing or it fails an mot. Id only get a garage to do it if i was hoping to sell the car with a service history but i have no intension of selling her!

well basically, beginning of this year it had an oil change by the last user, a service and a full re earthing of the cars electrics, so i dont really see the point in a service now i no what gets done. do i need an oil change since then?what bout brake fluid?how often should it b changed?

For the price of it i'd change the oil, filters check the water and change the plugs.
If everything else is ok then leave it.
And to be on the safe side get the Brake fluid changed then your sure it's fresh.
