Technical Gearbox

hi all, i 've been informed by my mechanic that my gearbox is knackered, does anyone know if other fiat gearboxes are the same?
ive had one quote from a scrappy of £500 and a whole months guarantee.
so i started wondering as the multi on the whole is a fairly rare car could i use a scudo gearbox or the likes

What is knackerd with the gearbox? mine went but it was just the bearings in the box after the oil had left the building and all i paid to have it repaired was £90 although i took the box out.
