Hello everyone,

Does anyone else find there Barchetta gearbox grates in 2nd and 5th gear?

I have to be so careful putting mine into second because it grates really badly otherwise. Sometimes I struggle to get it out of 5th. I am wondering if it is just my car or all of them.

I have loved having the Barchetta on the warmer days. Does anyone find they have a lot of faults?!!

2nd and 5th are fine for me. However, reverse can be a bit of a struggle at times.

I also love my B especially as I have been able to take the hood down a lot recently. However, when you buy a 7 year old FIAT (like mine), you have to expect problems. Thankfully, none have been major and are just down to wear and tear (hood, rubbers etc).

If it is crunching just going into the one gear then it sounds like the syncromesh is on it's way out on that gear, a slightly chipped tooth or two. It could and probably will last for years in that state but it is rather annoying:( Struggling to get it out of one gear, in this case fifth, I'm not too sure about. How old is it and how many miles?

One way to avoid the grating going into second gear is to take it out of first and release the clutch momentarily then press the clutch again before slipping it into second gear. After a short while you should be able to complete this manouvre fairly quickly:)

Mine is 10 years old and has done 108000 km. It is a bit awkward going into 1st, but doesn't crunch. Once in a while I have to double clutch going into reverse.

It does crunch if I go from 7000 rpm in 2nd, straight to 5th!

Cheers,

Matt.

If your gearbox is grating a bit make sure that you have the oil changed regularly to save the bits of metal in the oil making matters worse it's easy to do and takes about 10min but better if you leave the drain plug off for a while.

You will also notice that the drain plug has a magnet on it and lots of pieces of metal filings will be stuck to it so also make sure that it is cleaned thoroughly before replacing.

The gearbox will feel better after the oil is changed as after time like all oils it looses it's lubrication properties.

You can also drain the gearbox oil and refill it with automatic transmission fluid:D Honest:D It works great and makes for a slicker gearchange:) I've done this to three of my vehicles(y)

How old is the car?

Mine did, but fortunately it was still under warranty as the gearbox was knackered after about ten months - I left it for a while but eventually had it fixed for free [well not free as I had to buy the warranty for the 2nd and 3rd years as Fiat said it was an import and therefore only a one year Pan European warranty was given - they changed it about a year later, as did most manufacturers]

I found out that there was a recall in 2000 for the barchetta gearbox.
