Technical gearbox settings 1998 1.9 td

Hi. New to this and very non-technical. We are travelling around Europe in a 1998 Ducato camper van and had the vehicle in a workshop in Portugal for three days getting what we thought was a new clutch. Turns out the clutch is fine, but there's a problem in the gearbox 'settings' or some such, which the garage can't fix. When it's in gear, it drives fine, but changing, particularly down through the gears, it makes horrible crunching noises. I'm about as technical as a blancmange, so can't offer much more detailed information. Does anyone know a) how difficult (i.e. costly) this might be to repair; b) how long it might take and c) anywhere in southern or eastern coasts of spain/cote d'azur that might be able to fix it?!! thanks for any help or words of reassurance that may be forthcoming!

is this a fiat/commercial vehicle place..or just a village garage..??

the gear lever is normally connected through cables / or rods, these can stretch / wear.. making selection less precise
