Please confirm that it is n fact an Iveco longitudinal engine with rear wheel drive.

In either case you may have to consider a reconditioned replacement engine.

It is longitudinal engine rear wheel drive.qouted reconditioned fitted engine £4000.qouted £1200 for a used ex horse box engine fitted.would prefer former but big price difference

In the past I would have rebuilt my old one, however in your case you need to test the horse box engine and if 100% happy in all ways, as in not overheating, not smoking, clutch not slipping, pulling well and most important correct engine for your model.
Also for future needs I would keep the radiator, intercooler, gearbox and axle from the horse box as they will only get harder to obtain.
Re the £4000 recon engine, I would want to know how good the warranty is if it failed in 6 months time!!!
Either way new cambelt kit etc correctly fitted is important.
Another small point that needs addressing is why original engine failed, so if blocked radiator, hoses etc. or something else not included in either of your rebuilds it doesn't destroy the new engine and be outside any warranty agreement.:(:(:(

Original engine failed because a hose joining inlet and outlet pipe to ancillary heater kinked and ruptured causing it to overheat and seize.lnclined to repair theor original as compatibility assured when refitted.agree with you that horse box replacement may not be.thanks

Does bear looking into as costs can soon mount up either way, if seriously overheated a rebore and new pistons, cylinder block and head skimmed, new bearings, valves grinding in and gaskets oils etc. cost will soon mount up.:(
