If your car DOESN'T have the lift-for-reverse gear lever, you could just cut your lever down to suit. This would also give you a heavier, but shorter, gear lever travel. If you do have to lift the gearknob to get reverse then you're stuffed - sorry.
 
Now that I think about it......

It depends on how the knob attaches to the top, if it screws on then don't cut it.
If it's just a push fit on the top and if there are no cables or anything going up the middle of the gearstick then it should be fine to cut it down a bit.
