We have a 2021 Abarth 595 Essesse. Less then 20,000 miles on clock. Before warranty run out in June 2024 we booked it in at same time as service to dealership with a list of issues we wanted investigated before warranty expired.

One of these issues was a rattling noise coming from gearbox on start up. We were told that there were no issues on examination and that it was normal noise for these cars and not to worry.

Fast forward to now before Christmas the noise was getting louder we got it looked at my a friend who is a mechanic who said that he didn’t think it was normal and recommended we contact the dealer to take a look.

We took his advise, originally they said as they had it noted down as an issue before warrenty had expired they would take a look at it again for free and booked us in. When we dropped car off they changed minds and said it would be £155 to diagnose which we couldn’t bother to argue about. Just heard back that they have diagnosed and it’s a gearbox issue with quote of £3,500 to fix. We have done less then 3000 miles since they told us there was nothing to worry about.

They say that they aren’t willing to cover anything under warrenty because they have it covered in there paperwork that they checked the vehicle in June and there wasn’t anything wrong with it. Clearly there was as it is the same noise then as now.

How can a car need a new gearbox after less then 20,000!

Has anyone experienced gearbox issues with there 595s or have had experience where something has been checked whilst in warranty and fixed out of warranty. Or anyone have experience with motor trade in general that can advise what our best next steps are

The German Abarth forum is full of stories like this. It seems Esseesse's suffer from this problem more than others. There seems to be a bad batch of gearboxes affecting some modelyears and versions.

Thank you that’s interesting I will see if I can track some of the stories down to add into our email to Fiat

Hi, 🙂

Is it a manual..? 🤔

IF it actually needs serious work.. ,

You can have a guaranteed gearbox fitted for half of that quote

In the meantime contact FIAT UK,

If you have FSH in main dealer network they should be supportive
It’s a manual. They are saying it’s something to do with the 3rd gear selector so gearbox will have to be stripped down to fix and quoted 11 hours labour and parts of £3,500.

We have said we will take up with Fiat they then started back tracking and saying it doesn’t need fixing we can just leave it “noisy”

We have full service history from main dealer network

We have the same issue with a 2024 695 turismo. Car had its first service last year at a Stellantis dealership which we weren’t happy with ( bought used from Sytner at 7 months old with 8500 miles) as we couldn’t find a new one in the right spec). Car went into a small dealership in Wiltshire yesterday for 2nd service at 12000 miles who immediately identified the issue as they have repaired them before. Car is booked in for a week at the end of the month for repair under warranty.

This is when Abarth had a short term issue with synchro gears and they unleashed a batch of dodgy gearboxes out into the wild as far as I'm aware

I'm not sure on specific dates, but Abarth dealt with them under warranty as far as I can see

Take a look at https://www.abarthforum.co.uk/500-abarth/gearbox-chatter-on-new-595-competizione/15/

(apologies for taking you away momentarily from the excellent Fiatforum 🫢

Find out specifically what the issue is from their examination and then you need to escalate the problem to head office

Do you have contiguous service history ? (This will help greatly in a goodwill claim https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/service-repair/post-warranty-faults)
