When a magistrates court or crown court imposes a fine they will take action if it is not paid in the time allowed. They can order you to appear in court to explain why you have not paid and will issue an arrest warrant if you don't attend. They can order that the amount be taken from your pay or benefits. They can use bailiffs but usually impose a suspended custodial sentence. That means that if you pay the weekly amount ordered by the court you stay out of jail. Fail to pay and you go jail.
We've arrested people at the departure gate if requested for non-appearance or non-payment of fines at the Magistrates.

Sometimes they are Bailed at the Nick to report back to answer bail when they return. This is very inconvenient as they usually have to report at the Airport. This is a pain in the bum if they live in Newcastle. Then they've still got to get back through Security and on to the flight in time. It's usual for their luggage to be off-loaded and sent on afterwards, which often mean they don't have any clothes for the first two or three days.

Sometimes they are locked up at a local nick until such time as the Cops from their own area come to take them back.

Did anyone see Car Crime UK the other night? A guy on there stole a motorbike and got caught. His penalty? A £50 fine.

You know the country is ****ed when you can get fined the same for your dog escaping as you can for stealing a motorbike.
