Technical Fuel injection problem?

I have a 1996 Punto 1600cc.
Three years without a single problem, but this weekend it simply refused to fire up.
The battery is strong, it's turning over with gusto, but just won't start.
There's a red warning light stays on - the fuel injection symbol.
I've fiddled with the wires and checked the plugs are not loose.
Any suggestions about what I should do before putting it to the local garage?

go down the scrappy and get a new injector could be as simple as that
