My fiat Bravo 1.6 SX has a problem. For some months now, the temperature gauge has been all over the place, but never higher than half way, with no obvious effect on performance.

Recently, however, the fuel injection light is lighting up intermittantly. When this happens, there is an obvious drop off in power.

Fiat garage tried plugging into the ECU, but it was unable to communicate with the diagnostic computer. They suggested trying a spare ECU, but this would mean i had to buy the new ECU whether there was a fault or not (as this becomes coded unique to the car).

Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Luc.

Go to the fix a bravo section on the Bravo Guide, it has a number of possible causes and fixes.

The temperature guage issue may be a red herring but that can be checked too.

Hi

I had the same problem with my 1.8 Brava ELX. My local dealer (they're actually really good) told me that it was the Temperature Sensor for the ECU - the injector light would come on (usually when cold) and disappear before any fault is logged. Because my car took absolutely ages to warm up, i decided to fit a new ECU sensor (£30), new dashboard guage sensor (£10), new thermostat (£30) and fill the system with Halfords 5yr advanced coolant (+flush). Since doing that, I never had a problem with the injector light again, and the car warmed up much quicker, and started better in the mornings. The car was also noticeably smoother too!

I had a similar problem on my Brava 1.4S, it was not warming up to the correct operating temperature and the temp guage was very erratic. The ECU warning light was also illuminating randomly when the engine was cold. The cure appears to have been a new thermostat.

As a matter of interest the old t'stat was broken and so fully open . The spring retaining bracket was made of plastic and this had failed. I noticed on the replacement t'stat that these are now made of metal( stainless steel?).

I hope this helps
