Any ideas on this one folks?

My wife's 1.6 petrol Multi had loads of probs following a cambelt change - turned out the job hadn't been done properly and once rectified is now running perfectly.

Over the Christmas hols we took a trip down south & over the Channel for the day - and noticed that the car's fuel consumption had rocketed...given that most of the driving was on motorways, the figure of 25.6mpg was about 7mpg less than normal. Motorway driving normally returns something in the region of 30-33mpg.

I've been back to the garage & they've run an emissions test to see if there's any unburnt fuel - passed with flying colours. They advised me that potentially the ecu had not yet "learned" that the engine was running smoothly and as a result was burning more fuel - and that it might rectify itself after a long trip like that. They advised to reset the trip & watch the fuel consumption - which I did, and on the way home recorded 32mpg...

A bit of a long one I know, but has anyone else had the problem of wildly fluctuating fuel consumption, or does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing it? I should add that no warning lights have come on at all...

Thanks!! :)

I've been getting average 8,5 liter per 100 km in urban driving, outside temp 5-10°.

Seen as low as 7,8 to as high as 9,3. Not too much city driving, most of my driving is on the highway 90 km/hour speed limit and I'm driving over a small mountain on my trips.
