There's a link 'rod' that connects the motor to the driver's side wiper spindle. It has plastic inserts that snap over the balls on the levers. One of my plastic inserts has not only fallen off, but it's gone, vanished.

Anyone got one? Don't really want to buy a whole wiper mechanism when a cunningly placed cable tie is working. For now.

Thanks for the ideas. I can only find a kit that includes two new rods at £27. They do sell neat clips to hold it together if you have failing bushes though. I'll probably visit the scrappy if the cable tie wears out too frequently.

Fingers - did you have a straight face when you suggested annual maintenance of the wiper mechanism? I'm trying to have what I believe is called 'a life'!

On our mk2 I put neat little clips on from EBay they were a bit fiddly but work a dream is this the same issue. I think they were less than £5 each which seemed a little dear for what they are but much cheaper than other options

Yes - I saw those clips, and they are clever, but I've lost the plastic bush which means there isn't anything for the clip to seat onto.

Yep. Some of us even empty the ashtrays and change the oil and filter, even check the valve clearances from time to time.

Greasing up the wiper mechanism on a Mk1 takes about 15 minutes............

Let me see. 35 years of car ownership. 15 of two car ownership. So 50 X 15mins = 12.5 hours. Hours I've spent servicing wiper = 0. Minutes bodging with cable tie = 2. Minutes consulting the intarweb to find a bus = 20-30.

Summary.

Maintain wipers = 12.5 hours.

Don't bother, then fix = 1/2 hour.

And. My way I get the smug satisfaction of a job well bodged. You'll never know whether you averted a catastrophic wiper disaster!

ps. My main waste of time is old Land Rovers. Best ones have one motor per wiper. No link mechanisms and an easy-to-grease gearbox.

having once had the displeasure to work on then drive a series 2 landrover i would clearly rather grease ny nipples on a punto so im with fingers
