Wiring is an after thought for Italians....

I did think of saying two feet...then also thought that Didge would not understand proper measurements being so young...
I'm old enough to be before everything went metric, I was taught feet and inches at school! If anything when you said 60cm I had to picture 2 rulers (I believe a ruler is 30cm right?).

Regarding the wiring, I took the radio out to have a look at fitting a new one, theres about a billion wires, several aren't connected to anything, some I'm not sure where they go, others I've never seen anything like before....

There aren't any pictures in this thread. I don't like picture-less threads so here's one.

and yes, I've parked 30ft from the curb, I'm petrified of curbing those alloys

and yes thats a boring Vauxhall Vectra, its my Dads, it also a stupid 2.8 and drinks petrol, he's getting rid of it this year.

Watch out for info on this in Pippin's thread, later...! :D

It looks worse than it is in the picture but you can still see that clearly only one side is illuminated. Case of replacing a bulb?

If you haven't a spare atm, swap it from the warning lights side, as really that doesn't need to be lit as the warning lights illuminate, gotit this way around on the 750L atm :)

Thanks, how much of a faff is it to get to the bulbs, does the insturment cluster just remove on its own or do other bits have to be taken off first?

From what I remember from my research, today, the Haynes bods recommend removing the steering wheel, first, I'm afraid. Then, if it's like the rest of the dash, you just need a screwdriver... -- but it's late; it's raining; and I'm sorry, but my Haynes and Porter are in Pippin's boot....

If no-one else comes along -- which I'm sure they will, shortly: us Pandamaniacs seem to love the witching hours... -- then I'll dig the manuals out in the morning...! (y)

Don't need to remove steering wheel.

5 screws around the instrument panel / dash (1 each side and 3 along the bottom). Remove rubber bungs from ventilation controls (pull off, leave fan switch one on though). Pull forwards and disconnect fan switch plug (pulls out).

The undo screw each end of speedo unit, pull forwards, should be able to get to top 2 buns then with removing wiring at rear of the unit or speedo cable, and simply swap the bulbs around, or replace the dud if you've a replacement :)

I'll have a go tomorrow if I get time. I'm going to have to buy myself a Haynes manual. There seem to be about 5 different editions on ebay that cover my model year so not sure which actually suits it.
Is this right?

See, this is where Haynes fall down (like they do in a few places in the Punto manual -- being much more thorough than is actually needed in real life...). I did the first two paras, yesterday, to get the clock in... -- and therefore wondered why the steering wheel needed to be removed for the dial side of things....

I shall see what Porter says on the subject....

Stripping a car down once, as Haynes do, and then rebuilding it, is obviously no substitute for living with these cars... -- they're just a guide....

That would seem to cover it... -- but this is the one I have: and it was actually accurate on the wiring (if not the steering wheel removal...).

It's dead simple as said above. The only tip is be gentle! The screws round the dash surround do have a habit of breaking the plastic tabs if you're not careful - combination of old thin plastic & fists of ham is not a good one!! (y)

HU.....one red wire...one black....four speaker. That's it.
The current HU has 2 red, 2 brown wires. Thats fair enough to me, and 2 spade connectors for the speakers. However there is a further 2 random connectors which aren't plugged into anything most of which the wires don't go anywhere either.
I'll try get some pictures of my mad wiring later. Also I'm going to try and swap the bulbs over.
