Technical Ford Fiesta engine sound?

yeah i thought it looked like a difficult job because of the intake on the top. Looks like the 1.6 is a lot more tricky to work on than the 1.8. I will have a go this weekend if i can get a manual for it. Thanks for your help.

hi. i have a fiat brava 1.4i s 12v 98. and my engine sounded like u describe urs. and i had to get my camshaft changed. all in all i had my camshaft changed an oil change new tappets and new timing belt all for £280 which i think is worth it. and now my car sounds really smooth and runs a lot better

You have been sold this car because the cams were on the way out. End of story, get after them.

Of course if you bought privately you're screwed.

It may be easier to buy another car given how little you can pick old 1.4's up for.

the 1.1 and 1.3 HCS engines used in the fiesta did not have hydraulic tappets, so the common tapping noise they made was due to the tappets requiring adjustment. this may be the case on your 1.4 bravo if the tappets are also not hydraulic. however on the 1.4 the noise is usually due to the head suffering from oil starvation (dry tappets), leading to premature camshaft wear and a load of hassle. i'd get rid of it before it costs you more than you paid for it.

I have the same problem with my brava 1.6 16v (tappety sound) and also the strange idling problem, tried replacing timing belt and new tensioners which made no difference at all. It would be great to get to the bottom of this problem.

on a 1.6 you probably just need a new tappet, or maybe even more than one in extreme cases (check your oil level too). the idle is almost always due to the idle speed control valve on the 1.6, clean it inside with WD40.
