General Fitting new speedo .. Question !

Howdi gang !

Yup tis me again the speedo man ! Anyway I have managed to source a replacement instrument cluster for my Brava and it should be delivered tomorrow.

Now .. I have also sold my Brava and the lady is collecting it tomorrow evening, I have told her that the replacement Speedo is on the way and she has asked if i could fit it.. which I should be able to do, however I told her if i cant that it should only take a garage 30 mins to do it, and that I will cover the cost of that if it comes to it.

My question is though, when the new instrument cluster is fitted, what is the situation in relation to the mileage of the car ? When a garage fit it do they set it to what the old one was ? or is it possible to get some kinda cert showing the real mileage of the car as opposed to the reading on a new cluster.

or what is the normal procedure. I aint too sure myself but I want to know the answer in case she asks.

Any info would be much appreicated, hope this makes sense

They are easy enough to fit once you have found all the screws, it just pulls out and the new one clips in. What age is the car? Earlier ones will certainly show the mileage on the cluster, the later digital ones do as well I think but may be reprogrammable (though I'm not sure anyone 'legit' will do it). The MOT certificates show the mileage of the car on those dates and if it's done at a garage, they should be able to show on the invoice the old (if working) and new mileages.

Not too sure what happens after this at MOT time etc though?

Hmm ok .. someone said on " another " forum that I can swap the mileage displays ? Its a 1999 with digital mileage display.

I'm not sure of the internal workings of it, sorry just the unit as a whole. I'm sure there'll be someone here who's had it to bits

yes you could swap the digital displays over, but if you're not confident about removing the instrument panel i doubt you would want to open it up and start swapping bits over. i'm not saying its difficult, its very easy, but you could end up with 2 broken instrument panels if you dont know what you're doing.

the other option is milage correction. a mobile correction guy can come to your house and adjust the milage for you. it usually costs £20-40 and takes 10 mins. check yellow pages or local papers classifieds.

your main problem is that the car is getting collected too soon, so i greatly doubt you will have the time to get all this sorted before you sell the car. selling a car with incorrect milage is only illegal if you do not declare the incorrect milage, so legally it does not matter. what will you do if the new instument panel arrives in 3 days, faulty, and not the correct one? (it happens more than you'd think)
you're asking for a lot if you expect this new intrument panel to work, get fitted, and have the milage adjusted all in a couple of hours. i would have fixed the car and then sold it, its far less stressful. if this lady has a partner or son who is anything like me he'll come round causing trouble when he finds out about this milage fiasco. would you be happy buying a car in these circumstances?

she is fully aware of the condition of the car as I told her everything mate, as I aint trying to hide anything

i did read that bit, but that does not mean the instrument panel will arrive, work or be the correct one. it also does not show that you explained to the lady that the milage will be incorrect and that it will require correction. have you told her she will be buying a car with incorrect milage or arranged who is liable for the cost of correction?
my concern is that she is not expecting to buy a car with false milage. she has only been informed about a faulty speedo, which she thinks will be replaced at your cost. the milage issue does not appear to have been discussed even though it is the more important and expensive issue.

if after buying she tells her son about this milage situation, and her son is me, then i would be knocking on your door accusing you of clocking the car and probably doing things i would later regret. you need to be aware that this looks like a classic clocking scam and some people react badly to scams.

Thankfully not everyone is as dishonest as you percieve people to be.. and thankfully your not her son In relation to the part, I am sure a garage given the part number and exact vehicle will somehow manage to find the correct part to send me, if they dont then I will deal with that if and when the problem arises.

To be honest I really can't see why your being so agressive, as your reponse is not related to the question I asked, which to be honest is what I would like to get back to.

Let me worry about the person buying it and keeping them informed of the condition of the vehicle, and I'll let you go back looking for the toy that was obviously taken away from you as a child.

i think you misread my tone, i was not trying to come across as aggressive, i'm simply trying to point out the possiblity for problems in this situation. i've had simlar problems more than once and i know how easily things can go wrong. clocking is a very common problem in the motor trade, and people are quick to accuse.

in response to your question-
1. when a garage fit the instrument panel they will not correct the milage unless you arrange this with them first. few garages will have the equipment to be able to correct the milage.
2. there is no certificate that can be used in this situation
3. the normal procedure is to correct the milage on the new instrument panel

Thanks, appreciate your concerns, as I say thankfully I am not dishonest, and I explained everything in detail to her yesterday. If i was trying to scam her I would not have told her about the speedo at all.

Well the speedo is now due to arrive tomorrow morn. The current one has been working fine now for a couple of weeks without any issue. I will explain to her that the " back up / replacement one " will be provided hopefully tomorrow if that is ok, and give her maybe £100 back also to cover the cost of it being refitted, and if she wishes to have the mileage corrected it should cover the majority of getting this done also as the average price seems to be around £70.

I think she knows im being totally honest with her, as said, if I wanted to scam her i wouldnt have mentioned the speedo at all and she would have been none the wiser.

I valued the car as www.glass.co.uk and it came in at £1705, so I think she is getting a good deal @ £1200 to be honest considering the amount of work done to it before she bought it, a lot of people would sell the car knowing a load of work is due to be done, i on the other hand have done my best to get all the work done before selling it. New tyres, new brakes, new cat converter, new power steering pump, full service history with latest one only two weeks ago from Fiat dealership and a brand new boxed kenwood stereo from halfords along with the original one. Plus with mileage of only 59,000 I think its a fair deal.
