New camshaft (well new to me) arrived today thanks to slinkycinqi

now im planning to fit it on saturday. I read the valve clearances are the same on the 55 60 and 75 models so i shouldnt have to worry about tat, but will check anyways. i noticed littlepip advises getting new rocker cover seal and some of the blue paste sealent. and im guessinf i should replace he two rubbers on either end of the shaft too. is there anythig else i need to replace or would be advised to replace and anything else i need to know before fitting it?
 
you need locktite 0 gap sealer it's an pink glue available from fiat or maybe shop4parts

and then you need to know were to put it

oil has a habit of leaking out between even the most smove metal to metal surfaces via capillary action

between the cam shaft seal and the rocker cover seal is nothing to seal the head to the cam shaft bearing cap it's just metal to metal

there for oil will pee out of here in 4 places 2 at either end of the head

so you need to run a very small bead of 0 gap from the camshaft and coil seals respectively to the edge of the cap were it will then meat the rocker cover seal were it turns to go over the cap then tighten both the end caps down on the sealer

if you would like me to draw a picky of exactly what i mean i can i hope you can understand from what i have written here

other than that make sure tappets are good just because the clearance is the same don't mean the tappets are the same

the tappet clearance from valve head to camshaft is measured with a laser in the factory and the appropriate tappet selected and installed there for being it a different camshaft from a different machining tool it's likely there will be a difference on them

i would expect 2 camshafts from the same year and model of car to be pretty accurate being fiat but it all boils down to how sharp the tool was at the time and this that and the other

also you need some silicone in the usual place in the corners of the rocker cover seal as they leak here if you don't

wile you have the cover off it's worth giving the breather pipe a clean out if it's full of gunk will save your throttle body getting so mucked up

hylomar blue is very good, i use it on most things except where it has a chance to block oilways, cheap with a halfords trade card too :D

loctite (i think its 501 but its been a while) is anaerobic and this stuff will be fine.
 
or working there ;) we get a store trade card we can use at parts and i have my discount card :D

littlepip - how easy is it to fit the 75 cam to an uno? is it worth the hassle for little gain?

it would drop straight into an uno 999cc it would even fit a panda 850 as this is fire based also

it would give you a slight gain on the engine power wise but the low down torque you would lose on such a small engine would be massive

anyway if you have an uno you just need to fit carbs and rev it to 9000 then it don't matter how fast your going cos it sounds like 150mph

the only problem is with unos on carbs the 75 cam end float control is not eccentric and would not drive the fuel pump

go blue hylomar for £6.50 for a tube of i think 125ml is that expensive?? thought it was quite reasonable. is there anything else i will definately need before i start my cam swap? migh do it tomorrow as il be off work

The cam shaft clearance depends on

the tolerance of the individual lobe,
the tolerance on the valve stem,
the tolerances of the collets,
the collet groove hight,
the bucket thickness,
the centre line of the cam,
the cutting tolerances and lapping tolerances of the valve and
the cutting tolerances and lapping tolerances of the valve seat.

Using the 866 cam in a 1108 will give some gains in the rpm range but will also loose some in others.

In a 999 and a 769 engine it will show more losses than gains because the cam characteristics doesn't match the exhaust arrangement

Exhaust valve clearances e on the 866 cam different than the other FIRE engines.
 
Crumbs talk about make it hard.

Take cover off
Carefully check exactly where the cam is in relation to the engine
Undo cam and take off
put new cam back on by easing it under the cam belt and make sure its set in exactly the same place as the one you took off.
Bolt on
Check clearances, they should be checked, although the ones I've fitted were all fine.

Put rocker cover on
Drive

If there are any leaks get some hylomar and put a thin smear on.

Jobs done,
If you've done it before 30 minutes or less. If you've never done just take your time.
 
ok so iv'e been in paint again and drew a picture of were the glue is needed if you ever remove cam caps as no one seems to understand the fact oil will leak out between 2 metal to metal surfaces at an alarming rate

the first picture shows in pink were to put rtv silicone to make suret the rocker cover seals

the second shows to the best of my drawing abilities in pink again were to run a small bead of flange sealer or 0 gap sealer the stuff used to glue gearboxes together (not silicone or hylomar) it needs to be anerobic

the green bits represent the cam shaft seal and the coil pack o ring

so for example locktite 510

Loctite 510 Gasket Eliminator - High Temperature, recommended for applications where high temperature and chemical resistance is needed. A robotic dispense version of 510, Product 5101 is also available with identical performance to 510.
