k so I'm looking at new fronts (doors & tweeters?) with new pods for the door, and an active sub or monoblock + sub right? I guess the tweeters have to be same size/depth as whats in there now, doesn't look to be much scope where they're mounted...
I guess I can throw a couple of hundred at it for now...

Get a 4 channel amp, use 2 channel to power the front and "bridge" the other 2 to power the sub. An amps sound quality will dump on the head units internal job. Get a 10" or 12" sub in a sealed enclosure, then drive along in your new found audio heaven!

I'm confused!
Went to halfords and they had a nice souding set of infinity reference 6510's for 99 quid.
I tried just one speaker in the drivers door (just fits!) and screwed everthing back up. Fired up my head unit.. there's nowhere near as much bass there as there is with the factory speakers! balance full on left (factory speaker side) - lots of bass, balance all way to right -(inifinity speaker) - not much bass
Is it the case that these expensive speakers are designed to be used with a sub?
I've taken them back for now (bit too expensive for my budget anyway really!)

Try swapping the speaker leads round - they might be out of phase.

it was flush with the door,
dont see how being out of phase would affect the bass response, I returned them anyway cuz I can't really afford them
had some unexpected expenses this month. The man in Halfords said I could try them and bring em back if I wasn't happy so I thought I would take advantage of his kind offer.
I tried to find reviews of these speakers on the net and all I could find was this page he says the pic isn't 6510's but similar.
The speaker I took out the package to try looked like the one on the left - the one on the right looks different - is that because one of the two speakers has a built in woofer unit? Is that usual?
I didn't unpack everything cuz I knew there was a good chance it was going back so I just unpacked one speaker to install and compare with existing speaker. Didn't even look at what else was in the box :bang:

The one on the right is the one on the left with the tweeter mounted on it!
