also may i add that when i had the oil change they put symthetic 5w/30 oil in but looking through some of the records for the car it has had 5w/40 through the previous owner.

so i wonder has it got the right oil in the engine??

thanks marcus

If you remove the MAF you can clean it with Isopropanol or electrical contact cleaner from Halford (£5.00). Clean the element thoroughly & make sure it's dry before reinstalling.

Did you actually try blanking the EGR? If not I suggest you do as IMO this seems the more likely problem.

There's and easy way to check if the MAF sensor is causing a problem.

Unplug it, take the car for a short drive, if it feels better you probably have a faulty MAF and it needs replacing. If however unplugging the MAF makes no difference your barking up the wrong tree so look else where for the fault.

With regards to the white smoke, are you sure its white?

Could it be slightly blue, if it is your burning oil, most likely from a bust turbo, hence the power loss.

Right another update....

This may clear some things up.

Right we took the old sensor out and put a brand new one in, cleaned the air pipe leading to the sensor and so on. There was some oil on the old MAF so put the new one in and started the car and after a while to see in the oil returned but it didnt and was dry as anything.

I took it for a drive up the road and was kangrooing in first.
It still dosent seem to want to go above 2500 rpm but as soon as it hits 3000 rpm the power kicks in and very quickly goes up to the red line like it should.

After doing what we have done it runs better and ticks over fine with no abnormal noices but still getting the rev's problem and the thick white smoke.

The thick white smoke does not have any blue tint what so ever just plain white but may look at this closer.

Also i noted that im getting water out of the exhaust but now there is no milky substance in the oil cap.

Hope this helps really need this sorted so much thankful for the help guys.

Have you checked the MAP sensor, if the EGR was causing problems you can bet the MAP sensor is now covered in crap. The MAP sensor measures the manifold pressure(boost) so if its covered in crap it could be causing power loss etc..

Hi. Cleaning the EGR will tell you nothing it may still be jammed you need to blank it so we can then discount it completely. It takes very little time and costs nothing to try, you don’t need to remove the EGR just undo the two Allen bolts on the stainless steel corrugated pipe remove the gasket and use it as a pattern to make a blank plate leaving the centre without the hole.
The only other thing I can think of that’s common is the crank position sensor, they can play about and give the symptoms you describe they are about £40 and a bit fiddly, but definitely EGR is most common problem on the JTD.

hello all,

thanks dave yeah if you wouldnt mind that would be great. i will try and make the donation in a minute.

im in highwoods near the big tesco?

regarding the car..... i took it to the colchester fuel injection in hythe and had a look and rev it 4 or 5 times, left it for a bit and rev'd it untill the red line and all of a sudden the bloke said its responding much better to the throtle.

so its been fine quieter, smoother and responding to the throttle untill..... i got to my other halfs and was in fifth gear put the throttle down and it kangaroos put it down to fourth and obviously the higher rev's kicked in and went to normal.

left my other halfs later today and left it to run for a while and put it in first to pull away and guess what.... it kangroos and changing up made no difference.
It was like this for around 5 miles (struggle really bad up a hill 40mph-25mph), it came to a junction and went in second gear, so i decided to put my foot down and again struggles to get past 2000rpm but once it was past this the turbo kicked in and had plenty of boost and went up in gear ratio easly and was fine all the way home but still this niggling problem.

just want it gone lol so frustrating after what iv done to it lately but i will get there soon and much to my releif :).

regards marcus

This is so like what mine did...Except at times mine wouldn't start at all, just turned over, with a rich diesel smell from the exhaust.
When I stripped the EGR the valve was stuck open, when I pushed it back it clicked back to shut, and when I pushed it open it stuck open, That is why I think the fault on mine was intermittent-it depended if the valve was stuck open or shut.
I cleaned mine out, used wd40, brake cleaner etc and pushed and pulled until it freed off completly. When it ran correctly I then blanked it off, it can't get blocked or stuck now.

thank you again dave, no my dad's car is petrol sri.

As my dad might of mentioned earlier, i took the car out earlier and have had problems today.

I think it is defo something to do with the air flow/turbo.
it seems as though something is not letting the air flow properly or the turbo....cant spell the plunger thing on the bottom of it. As while im driving it seems to be that before 2000 rpm the turbo sometimes dosent want to kick in and car just kangroos in any gear you have it in (no matter what speed either) and i get a clunking as if the turbo wants to go but no air flow to the turbo if that makes sence??

The speicalist i spoke to yesterday said it may be either the electronic side of the EGR or the plunger thing may be sticking, he said if it is knacked it would require the whole turbo being done.
im also going to check for any slits in the pipe (blue).

so while im fitting the EGR blank plate tomorrow should i try oiling up the plunger thingy?

one more question....how would the blank plate help and also if the EGR is knacked would the plate still work as it would if the EGR was fine??

regards marcus
