Hi.
I received this message from Mike at Gendan.
Surely what Fiat is doing is against EU law's?

Hi Trevor,

Sorry, I’ve just noticed it’s a late 2017 vehicle.

That would make it a 2018 model year car, and so quite likely to be fitted with FIAT’s “Security Gateway” (SGW) module.

This sits between the diagnostic socket and the car’s ECUs and prevents all diagnostic access unless it can authenticate with FIAT’s servers in Italy. This essentially limits diagnostics to FIAT’s own dealer tool and blocks all access to 3rd party equipment.

This can be bypassed, and bypass cables are available online, but we do not stock them as their use may invalidate your warranty.

So unfortunately we can’t guarantee any of our tools would work on that car.

Best regards,

Mike

Probably in line with EU laws if they let firm's have access for a fee (likely something stupid)

Most manufactures seem to be going this sort of system now to combat obd imobliser bypass

From what I can see after a quick google search is that there are tools available that can authenticate with the SGW. However they all seem to be stupid expensive (there was one for 600 USD:eek:) and they need to authenticate with the FCA server by downloading a 'token' which one has to pay for.

While I do understand the need for combating OBD immobiliser thefts there must be better ways to do this. Why not provide a PIN code with the vehicle documents to open the SGW or just bring back the master/red key without which you can't perform vulnerable functions. My 2019 Vespa came with a red master key why didn't Fiat just continue with a modified version of that system.

Probably as you can just pull the imobliser code from the ECU hence why they have encrypted all access to the can network to prevent this

Hi.
Another issue for me is I don't use a Windows based operating system. I have been using Linux for well over 10 years and am now onto Mint Cinnamon 19.3. MES is not available for Linux so the use of it is really out of the question anyway. I won't use any Windows operating system for personal reasons.

Perhaps try and borrow a generic handheld OBD reader or load the iOS version of MultiECU although it sounds like you'd be more of an Android guy than an Apple one.

I'm really interested to know if 2017 car's have the security gateway because I'd like to add electric mirrors to my car and I'll need MultiECU access to activate the heated mirror function.
