Technical fiat punto smoking and missing after new head gasket

Yes checked all wires and all ok, just typical... Battery light comes on and goes out randomly and battery voltage goes back up to 13.8 for a few seconds then back to sub 12V... Me thinks a new alternator is needed. Shame because I wanted to take it out for a test drive but can't believe how heavy the steering is!
Am I allowed to say fix it again tomorrow on here lol

well done for building the engine up i thought it was for a 16 valve so never looked in

with regards your alternator youve probably got oil on the commutator and brushes
if you take alternator off again (5 minute job) get your 1/4 inch drive set out and take the plastic top off you will see the cassette holding the brushes in
try cleaning them up if there is oil here and the commutator and put it back together again
i dont think you need a soldering iron but its a while since i took one to bits

Took the plastic cover off the back of the alternator and tried to separate the case but it looks like the windings (red wires you can see through the vents) seem to poke through the bottom and are 'crimped' into the electrical components at the end (rectifier) so the case can't be separated... Can't find the article on repairing alternator / brushes can anyone help out on this?

Well I worked out how to get the brushes out and I think I found my problem

Sorry! Just found the thank you button and pressed it lots :-D

Never assume rings.

A simple test: warm up the engine, and with the engine running, remove the oil filler cap. If it fumes, worn rings are a possibility.

A better test. Dry and wet compression test. Use no more than 5ml of engine oil. If the compression results improve markedly then it's a ring issue. If not, it's not.

Anyroadup, post the results.

As S and B says, running rich and burning oil are very, very different issues.

will these fumes be visible or do u need to spot them with flashlight or looking toward sun or something
