I have a well used 150,000 miles Fiat ducato 2,5 Tdi cat 1996 with a small slow oil leak, it appears to come from behind and high up by a sheet metal plate between the engine block and clutch housing and drips out along it and mainly from the bottom making a mess underneath especially when driving, then basically stopping after engine is off. The problem has been going for a year/3000 miles gradually getting worse, any ideas gratefully received.

Sounds like rear crank seal apart from the high up bit, gets blown all over the place while driving though. If the crank seal I'd rather top it up until the clutch gives up than change it as its a gearbox out job. You can get an undertray for about £45 delivered from germany if its just the mess thats bothering you. Also keeps the salt, spray, muck etc out:

If the rear crank seal has gone it could be a symptom of worn main bearings in which case a new seal won't last very long.

the leak is about 1pint for 1000 -2000 miles do you think this could last for a while like 5000-10000 miles or could the leak go really bad suddenly and ruin the engine??I know thats a hard question but this is a camper I live in, help please!

Get the engine and g/box cleaned and investigate where it's coming from with bright lights and mirrors after you've driven a few miles. If it was losing that much oil into the clutch housing, I'm amazed the clutch still works. The source of the leak could be something other than the crankshaft seal, but you must find where it's coming from.

thanks but done all that repeatedly, which is why I am after ideas, even a garage was uncertain as to the problem over a year ago, just gone through another MOT,cleaned off any oil and it is not obvious....
