Ellenator is a company that, for around $5,000 plus the cost of the car, will take a Volkswagen Polo, SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, or a Fiat 500 and replace the rear axle with a new one that uses a pair of 14 inch wheels only about 18 inches apart, makes room for these new wheels by reworking the floor in the rear luggage area, reflash the ECU so the engine only puts out 20 HP, and fills in the now-empty rear wheel arches with sheet metal.

They can't drive a normal car until 17 I think like the UK


It's old the old loophole that you could drive a robin reliant on a motorbike lisence

Whoever got this, should’ve waited 2 years till the hit 18 so they could get a real 500 with some power.

I believe in Germany you need to be 18 to drive a car without restrictions. At 17, you must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

What I don't understand is why it needs the smaller wheelbase, because normally what makes it legal for 16 year olds is the power /speed limit. E.g. Fir the Renault Twizy, there is a version that's limited at 45km/h. That one looks normal, though.

It's been re-engineered for 16-year old drivers that only have an A1 license. According to German laws, if you have the wheels close enough together, a vehicle can be classified as a 3-wheeler. Also, the regulations dictates that A1-class vehicles can offer a maximum output of 20 PS, so the normal engine of the Fiat 500 gets de-tuned.

I'd guess if you saw a car like this it sends an instant signal that its going to be SLOOOOOW, where as if it just looked like a normal 500 you'd end up getting angry if stuck behind it going slow and seemingly not getting a move on.

The original Beetle having about the same amount of power buy probably weighing a lot less meant it topped out at about 60mph so maybe the plan is to keep the speed below 50mph ?

Probably a good thing as it might tip over if you get too carried away.

My 16 year old son has just bought him self a 2014 abarth 500 in predation for his 17th birthday next month..

The wait is killing him.. On the upside, it’s honing his cleaning skills..

Insurance for a 17 year old on a arbarth best have quite deep pockets

I'm not sure he has deep pockets having just bought the car... it needs the cambelt + waterpump doing.. oh and the battery died on day 2 of ownership.

For the insurance, its £416 FC whilst on a provisional and the quotes are showing a "theoretical" £1100 when he's passed ( I appreciate that might change a little )

Compared to £1800 for a Fiesta or Corsa and £1400 for a 1.4 mini..

I guess there must be less 17 year olds in Abarths than the usual car choices for that age group perhaps ?

I had a 1800 mondeo when I was in my 20s and my friend had an 1800 escort with the almost exact same engine, his insurance was twice mine, this was about 20 years ago now and even then I was paying in excess of £800 for a boring family saloon with a couple of years no claims.

I’d be amazed to see a 17yo paying that little amount of money for what is a tiny hot hatch with a 140+hp turbo engine.

Same here most would pay that any more for anything even something like a 1l Dacia sandero

well, i've just double checked it for peace of mind and its coming out as £ 417.05 and £150 excess with Lloyds on a provisional licence with me and his mum as named drivers.

With a full license, the indication today is £ 1062.88 with £150 excess. No blackbox ( this would reduce it to £892.64 ). There are 3 insurers under £1100 with no black box
