Technical fiat 500 dualogic multiple failures

I had asked the Fiat dealer why the Alfa Romeo's had the dual clutch gearboxes while the Fiats have to make due with the dualogic,

You forget that Alfa used the same based Selespeed box up until the recent TCT box, and the TCT has only been available for about a year, where as the 500 Dualogic probably 4 times this

We also must remember that ahmett's car is probably the 2nd most thrashed 500 behind draigflag's Abarth. Funny how people who admit to thrashing their cars always seem to have drivetrain issues. :chin:

Fair enough, but I have driven a manual car for the same period of time doing the same type of 'thrashing' and never had a problem. What I am saying is I think the dualogic box is too sensitive for proper driving, it is best suited driving it like a snail in auto in the city, which I guess the car was designed for...

and last I checked draigflag's car seems to be doing fine?

update: just checked on fuelly for draigflag and he filled his tank just yesterday on the abarth and averaged 27 mpg on his last run so he is definitely still thrashing with joy!

Yes but on the 'brand' new Fiat 500 L you can only have dualogic! We are considering the 500L for my mother but I don't think I will recommend it to her!

But its almost the same car underneath, so is still using 500 tech, they're not going to spend millions to redesign a chasis and engine bay just so a handful of people can specify a TCT gearbox, which is an Alfa Brand, and not Fiat I would add.

Ok guys the car is with the dealers now, I had to beg them to take the car in today as they said they were full but I said look guys the red transmission light came on its a serious problem and I don't want to be left on the side of the road!!
Luckily I am on a first name basis with the dealer and they are only 200 meters from my office so I got away with it and don't need a courtesy car while they check it out.

I'll let you guys know.
The office assistant's husband was an electrical engineer with an Opel (vauxhall to you)main dealer and he told me that Opel's have the same duallogic box as Fiat produces it on behalf of them. He told me that he found the boxes to be very sensitive and to 'be careful'.

Hi got the car back, they found a fault code in the car saying the gearbox does not awknowledge the duallogics system's request to change gear and its instantaneous so when the car is closed and started again the system resets and the problem doesnt come again.

They said if an error message comes on again to bring it back to the dealer where they will run some tests..

I have a feeling this will be a permanent recurring problem with the car..

Was driving to work today after having had a relatively gearbox trouble free drive of around 150 km's yesterday through some technical roads (the 195/50 tires make such a difference the car felt really good and the gearbox hardly made any mess despite changing so many gears during the drive!) when the red gearbox light came on and said check transmission- manual mode unavailable.

So I went straight to the dealer and left it with them. They said that if the same error code comes on during diagnostic checks as last time (the error code says when command to change gears is made, the system does not pick it up), they will replace the duallogic sensor governing the request to change the gears (if that makes any sense).

So I am waiting for a phone call from them; I hope it fixes the problem once and for all!

Oh yes, the problem is back again!

Here are some pics.. Dealer on Monday!
I mean how hilarious is it if you are driving the car, you try to parallel park and the car refuses to go into reverse until you turn off and turn on the engine again!! Embarassing with ppl beeping behind you!!!

IN pic 1 u can clearly see that the gearlevel position is in R but the car is still in 1st!!!

In video it basically is saying check transmission while driving and refuses to leave auto mode

The thumping you hear in the video is me trying to change the gears!

Ok my dealer has officially given up on the case, they said call Fiat HQ. I did, and I told them everything that happened over the past few years. They said yes we can see you have had a few issues with your car (after giving them the chassis number). So they said take and leave the car at the Dealer, and Fiat HQ's own mechanics will intervene. So lets see now what comes of it.

So are they basically saying it's down to unfair wear & tear & therefore not covered by warranty?
Sorry need to update. I spoke with a tech for 15 mins with admin staff witnessing and i think we found a breakthrough the tech may finally know the problem. He said he suspects the 'something'ometer (a plastic part that senses the movement of the gearshift lever) is malfunctioning and he said he has seen this problem before with the same symptoms. However the problem is diagnostics recognizes an instantaneous fault code (not a permanent one which is why it is recurring the warning lights as in they go on and off). The tech offered to change this and see if it fixes this agelong problem. Now the problen is will fiat pay for this fix (he said fiat are very strict with warranty claims they only fix sonething if is proven broken not intermittently malfunctioning...) so i gave dealer fiat case number abd they will get back to me.

Sone humor, my case number is 8 digits long! To which admin guy said fiats must have many problems! The main dealer was originally chrysler/jeep before adopting fiat when it took over chrysler.

So we wait and see ( i will tell you exactly what the somethingometer is) when we proceed with the fix and see how we will do it)
